Voith drives operational stability at Green Bay Packaging with OnControl.Pulping Detrashing solution

Green Bay Packaging’s stock preparation upstream of PM 4

(IN BRIEF) Voith has helped Green Bay Packaging stabilize operations and improve detrashing throughput at its Green Bay, Wisconsin facility through the OnControl.Pulping Detrashing system, which has been running since March 2024. The smart automation solution adapts cycle timing based on real-time conditions, reducing variability, equipment plugging, and contaminants while ensuring cleaner rejects and greater fiber recovery. These improvements have allowed Green Bay Packaging to enhance mixed paper utilization and maintain high quality standards. William Cone, VP of Mill Operations, highlighted the system’s impact in maximizing efficiency and freeing staff for higher-value tasks. Voith’s solution can also be integrated with its MillOne ecosystem, supporting greater automation and advancing the concept of autonomous paper mills.

(PRESS RELEASE) HEIDENHEIM, 2-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Voith has enabled Green Bay Packaging to achieve significant gains in detrashing throughput and operational reliability at its Green Bay, Wisconsin facility through the deployment of its OnControl.Pulping Detrashing solution. In operation since March 4, 2024, the advanced smart control system has automated critical aspects of the detrashing process, resulting in steadier operations, reduced process variability, and more consistent performance compared with standard timed purges.

The implementation has led to several measurable benefits, including cleaner rejects, fewer equipment blockages, improved fiber recovery, and reduced contaminants in the accepts. By dynamically adapting cycle timing to real-time material conditions, OnControl.Pulping Detrashing ensures stability across shifts while allowing Green Bay Packaging to optimize its use of mixed paper without sacrificing the high quality expected by customers.

William Cone, Vice President of Mill Operations at Green Bay Packaging, praised the results: “Our goal was to maximize our pulping efficiency. OnControl.Pulping Detrashing has helped us achieve that by delivering reduced variability and freeing up our team to focus on higher-value tasks. We could not see operating without it anymore.”

The solution can be implemented as a stand-alone system or integrated into Voith’s MillOne digital ecosystem, enabling valuable connections to additional plant data and laying the groundwork for further automation in stock preparation and the advancement of autonomous paper mills.
