Urban Safety Upgrade: Volkswagen’s Exit Warning System in Focus

If another road user is approaching from behind as an occupant is exiting the vehicle, the exit warning system can issue warnings in various stages.

(IN BRIEF) Volkswagen has introduced an advanced Exit Warning System designed to enhance safety in inner-city traffic. This system alerts drivers and passengers to approaching road users when exiting the vehicle, particularly benefiting vulnerable road users like cyclists. The system comes standard in the new ID.7, new Passat, and new Tiguan models and is available as an option in the ID.4 and ID.5. It employs radar sensors and LED lights to warn of approaching road users and includes safety features such as preventing the door from opening briefly if a road user is nearby. Volkswagen’s commitment to passenger safety and innovation is highlighted through this technology.

(PRESS RELEASE) BERLIN, 7-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Volkswagen Group (ETR: VOW3), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of automobiles and commercial vehicles, introduces its latest generation Exit Warning System, designed to enhance safety in inner-city traffic by alerting drivers and passengers to approaching road users when exiting the vehicle. This innovative system serves as a critical safety feature, particularly in urban environments where vulnerable road users such as cyclists are prevalent.

The Exit Warning System, available as standard in the new ID.7, new Passat, and new Tiguan models, offers comprehensive protection for all passengers. In the Golf, ID.4, and ID.5, this technology is available as an optional feature in a technically specific form.

ID.7 – Cutting-Edge Safety

The new ID.7 boasts the highest specification of the Exit Warning System. It utilizes two rear radar sensors, strategically positioned on the left and right in the bumper, to scan the area behind the vehicle. Importantly, it provides advanced warning even before a door handle is touched. When a road user approaches, an LED light embedded in the exterior mirror illuminates as the first level of warning. Should a door handle be activated, the system briefly prevents the door from opening. In the event of the door being opened, a warning signal is triggered. Notably, the system remains active for three minutes after the vehicle is parked and turned off, ensuring safety for all departing passengers.

Passat and Tiguan – Parallel Safety Measures

The Exit Warning System in the new Passat and new Tiguan operates in a similar manner to the ID.7. It utilizes the LED light in the respective exterior mirror to alert vehicle occupants to an approaching road user before any door operation. In the event that a door handle is engaged, an acoustic warning is emitted via a speaker within the door. These models, equipped with mechanical door locks, do not include the additional door opening delay feature found in the ID.7.

Optional Safety in ID.4 and ID.5

For the ID.4 and ID.5, the Exit Warning System is available as an optional feature, functioning similarly to the ID.7. However, in these models, the LED light in the exterior mirror is activated only when passengers operate the door handles in response to a potential danger. All other warning levels, including the acoustic signal within the door and the electronic opening delay, remain consistent with the ID.7.

The introduction of the Exit Warning System reaffirms Volkswagen’s commitment to passenger safety and aligns with the brand’s ongoing efforts to innovate and enhance vehicle technology. This advanced safety feature builds upon Volkswagen’s legacy as a pioneer in vehicle safety systems.

The first Volkswagen model to feature an Exit Warning System was the current Golf, employing a similar operation to the ID.4 and ID.5. Mechanical door locks in the Golf, as well as in the Passat and Tiguan MQB models, exclude the additional door opening delay feature.
