STRABAG-Led Consortium Wins Major 194 Million Euro Contract to Complete Key Section of Slovenia’s Northern Corridor Infrastructure Project

A STRABAG consortium has secured a 194-million-euro contract to build another section of the Northern Corridor in Slovenia

(IN BRIEF) STRABAG d.o.o., leading a consortium, has secured a 194 million euro contract from DARS d.d. to construct Lot A – Velenje, the final missing section of Slovenia’s 3rd Development Axis Northern Corridor, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and enhancing safety between Velenje and Slovenj Gradec. The project includes a 2.1 km expressway, viaducts, tunnels, interchanges, and supporting infrastructure, along with extensive utility and water management works, and is scheduled to begin in March 2026 with a duration of approximately 40 months. With a 60% stake, STRABAG continues to strengthen its long-standing presence in Slovenia, contributing to major national infrastructure initiatives aligned with EU development priorities while maintaining a strong project pipeline and significant market position.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 25-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — STRABAG d.o.o., leading a consortium, has been awarded a contract valued at approximately 194 million euros to deliver the final missing segment of Slovenia’s 3rd Development Axis (Northern Corridor), specifically Lot A – Velenje. This project represents a key infrastructure development on the Velenje–Koroška expressway, designed to strengthen regional connections, ease congestion on existing road networks, improve overall traffic safety, and reduce travel times between Slovenj Gradec and Velenje.

The contract, commissioned by Slovenia’s motorway operator DARS d.d., forms part of a broader national infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing transport links between the Austrian and Croatian borders. STRABAG holds a 60% share in the consortium and will play a leading role in delivering the project. The Northern Corridor is a central element of Slovenia’s long-term development strategy, supported by both national investment frameworks and European Union cohesion funding priorities.

This newly awarded section builds on STRABAG’s ongoing and recently completed contributions to the corridor, including work on Lots B and H and the opening of the Konovo Tunnel. The company, which has maintained a presence in Slovenia for more than three decades, continues to expand its footprint in the region through major infrastructure projects and strategic partnerships.

Lot A – Velenje encompasses a 2.1 km stretch of new expressway along with a range of associated infrastructure. Key components include a 552-metre two-lane viaduct, 1,120 metres of cut-and-cover tunnels and caisson structures, and a 231-metre railway underpass. The project also involves a 280-metre temporary railway diversion, construction of two interchanges at Velenje and Škale, 3.9 km of bypass and service roads, as well as five junctions and five noise protection barriers.

In addition to road construction, the consortium will undertake significant utility works, including the installation of supply lines and water management systems. The construction phase is expected to last approximately 40 months, with works scheduled to begin in March 2026. The project leverages the consortium’s combined regional experience and technical capabilities to ensure efficient delivery and high-quality execution.

Slovenia continues to position itself as a stable and attractive market for infrastructure investment, supported by sustained government funding and alignment with EU development priorities. STRABAG has been active in the Slovenian market since 1995 and continues to play a major role in the country’s construction sector. Current flagship developments include the Emonika project in Ljubljana, which will feature Slovenia’s tallest office building, as well as a new university complex for the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The company reports an annual turnover of around 150 million euros in Slovenia and maintains an order backlog of approximately 350 million euros.
