STMicroelectronics Partners with SP Group to Upgrade Cooling System and Reduce Carbon Emissions by 2,140 Tons Annually

(IN BRIEF) STMicroelectronics and Singapore Power (SP Group) have partnered to upgrade the cooling infrastructure at ST’s Toa Payoh site. The new dual-temperature cooling system will reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by 2,140 tons annually. The system, designed to support both low and medium-temperature cooling, will save 5 Gigawatt-hours of energy per year, equivalent to powering over 1,100 four-room HDB households. The project is part of ST’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2027 and supporting Singapore’s sustainability goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) GENEVA, 29-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global leader in semiconductors, has partnered with Singapore Power (SP Group) to upgrade its cooling infrastructure at the Toa Payoh site, a critical hub for ST’s packaging R&D and wafer testing operations. This new dual-temperature cooling system will optimize energy usage and help reduce carbon emissions by approximately 2,140 tons annually, furthering STMicroelectronics’ commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.

“Following the landmark agreement with SP Group in 2022 to implement Singapore’s largest industrial district cooling system at our AMK TechnoPark operations, the upgrade to the cooling system at our Toa Payoh site demonstrates ST’s continued commitment to cutting-edge cooling solutions and our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2027,” said Jean-Louis Champseix, Group VP and Head of Sustainability at STMicroelectronics. “Cooling represents a significant portion of our site’s total energy consumption, and this new system’s enhanced efficiency will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also help us comply with Singapore’s Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).”

  1. Harsha, Managing Director for Sustainable Energy Solutions (Singapore) at SP Group, added, “This project showcases how strategic partnerships and innovative infrastructure can drive decarbonization in energy-intensive industries like manufacturing. Together with ST, we’ve developed a custom cooling solution that boosts operational resilience while promoting sustainability. We look forward to rolling out similar solutions across the region, furthering our shared commitment to a sustainable future.”

The new cooling system, with a capacity of up to 3,200 refrigerant tons (RT), offers dual-temperature capability, delivering both low and medium-temperature cooling directly. This eliminates the need for heat exchangers, which are typically used to produce medium-temperature cooling. The system will save up to five Gigawatt-hours of energy annually, equivalent to powering over 1,100 four-room HDB households each year.

Under the agreement, SP Group will design, build, operate, and maintain the new chiller cooling system, providing chilled-water-as-a-service through a 20-year contract. The construction and implementation phases are expected to be completed by December 2025. This upgrade aligns with Singapore’s National Environment Agency’s (NEA) MEES, which comes into effect in December 2025, as well as the government’s SG Green Plan 2030. By adopting these solutions, STSingapore contributes to both global environmental goals and Singapore’s sustainable future.

Note to editors:
In 2022 STMicroelectronics and SP Group signed an agreement to establish Singapore’s largest industrial district cooling system at ST AMK TechnoPark. The cooling system will help ST achieve 20% savings in cooling-related electricity consumption and reduce carbon emissions by up to 120,000 tons annually. It will be Singapore’s largest district cooling system to be implemented for an industrial development when operational in 2025.
