STMicroelectronics and SP Group Launch Singapore’s Largest Industrial District Cooling System to Drive Carbon-Neutral Manufacturing

(IN BRIEF) STMicroelectronics and SP Group have inaugurated Singapore’s largest industrial district cooling system at ST’s Ang Mo Kio TechnoPark, developed in partnership with Daikin Airconditioning (Singapore). The advanced system, capable of reducing carbon emissions by 120,000 tonnes annually and cutting cooling energy use by 20%, is a key step toward ST’s 2027 carbon neutrality goal. It also recycles over half a million cubic meters of water each year and frees up significant operational space for additional sustainability initiatives. The project achieved over two million accident-free man hours and earned the Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification for exceptional efficiency. The partnership extends to ST’s Toa Payoh site, where another high-efficiency chiller system is being developed to further reduce emissions, supported by smart energy and water management systems. (PRESS RELEASE) GENEVA / SINGAPORE, 22-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global leader in semiconductor technology, has officially begun operations for Singapore’s largest industrial district cooling system at its Ang Mo Kio TechnoPark, developed in partnership with SP Group (SP) and Daikin Airconditioning (Singapore). The facility, inaugurated by Ms. Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, marks a major step toward sustainable industrial cooling and carbon neutrality.

Designed, built, owned, and operated by a joint venture between SP Group and Daikin, the new system delivers chilled water via a centralized closed-loop network, replacing individual chillers across ST’s 90,000-square-metre site. With an installed capacity of up to 36,000 refrigeration tonnes (RT), it provides continuous cooling for both manufacturing and office areas, while reducing energy consumption and environmental impact. The initiative is projected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 120,000 tonnes per year, lower cooling-related electricity costs by 20%, and repurpose over 500,000 cubic meters of water annually through reuse of reverse osmosis reject water.

Rajita D’Souza, President of Human Resources and Corporate Social Responsibility at STMicroelectronics, described the system as a milestone in the company’s sustainability journey, highlighting that it supports ST’s target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2027. “This achievement reinforces our commitment to developing energy-efficient solutions that reduce emissions, preserve resources, and align business growth with environmental responsibility,” she said.

Stanley Huang, Group Chief Executive Officer at SP Group, emphasized the collaboration’s national significance, calling it “a pivotal step in advancing Singapore’s low-carbon transformation.” He noted that district cooling represents a key enabler of energy resilience and decarbonization in industrial and urban infrastructures.

Chua Ban Hong, Managing Director at Daikin Airconditioning (Singapore), added that Daikin’s involvement reflects its mission to deliver long-term sustainable climate technologies that enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

The project has also created additional operational benefits for ST, freeing up 4,000 square meters of space at its Ang Mo Kio site for new environmental systems, including perfluorocarbon (PFC) abatement and planned installations for water reclamation and volatile organic compound (VOC) reduction. During construction, over two million accident-free man hours were recorded, reflecting the project’s strong safety culture. The plant has earned the Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority, achieving a 44% reduction in embodied carbon through sustainable material and system choices.

The collaboration extends beyond Ang Mo Kio. ST and SP are also upgrading the cooling system at ST’s Toa Payoh facility under a 20-year chilled-water-as-a-service agreement. Once completed in 2025, the system is expected to save 2,140 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. Both companies are further implementing an advanced Energy Management Information System (EMIS) with 2,400 smart meters and sensors across ST’s sites, providing data-driven insights to improve energy and water efficiency.

Through these efforts, STMicroelectronics and SP Group are setting a new benchmark for industrial sustainability, showcasing how large-scale digitalization and decarbonization can work hand in hand to accelerate progress toward a net-zero future.
