SSAB and Vestre collaborate to create the world’s first piece of furniture made with fossil-free steel

(IN BRIEF) SSAB and Vestre have entered into a collaboration agreement to produce a piece of furniture using fossil-free steel. Vestre aims to transition to more sustainable materials and production methods, while SSAB is committed to leading the global steel industry towards a carbon dioxide-free future. The new technology is a result of the HYBRIT initiative (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology) which aims to replace coal and coke with hydrogen and fossil-free electricity in the blast furnace process. Vestre will showcase the first collaboration project in the coming months.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 16-Mar-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — SSAB (STO: SSAB-A), a Nordic and US-based steel company, and Vestre, a Norwegian urban furniture producer, have announced a collaboration to create the world’s first piece of furniture made with fossil-free steel. Vestre will unveil the first collaboration project later this spring.

Vestre’s goal is to transition to more sustainable materials and production methods to provide a maximally sustainable product that meets the demands of today’s customers. SSAB aims to lead the global steel industry towards a carbon dioxide-free future with its fossil-free steelmaking technology, which replaces coal and coke used in the blast furnace process with hydrogen and fossil-free electricity.

”It is fantastic to start this sustainability journey with Vestre since they share our goal of reducing the carbon footprint throughout the value chain. At the same time, the collaboration also shows the breadth of uses for our fossil-free steel”, says Thomas Hörnfeldt, Head of Sustainable Business at SSAB.

”When we learned about the HYBRIT process and SSAB’s fossil-free steel, we immediately saw this as a big part of our solution towards a net-zero future. Early estimates show that converting all our steel to fossil-free could reduce our overall footprint by around 60 percent. We intend to be a driving force for demand for the fossil-free alternative, and as the prices of the EU’s mandatory carbon dioxide quotas increase, there will be increased pressure on the steel industry to also reduce carbon dioxide emissions, says Øyvind Bjørnstad, Chief Sustainability Officer, at Vestre.

The collaboration between SSAB and Vestre is a significant step towards a more sustainable future and the development of products that meet the increasing demand for sustainable materials.
