Skanska Secures USD 77 Million Contract to Rebuild Stewart Middle Magnet School in Tampa

(IN BRIEF) Skanska has been awarded a USD 77 million contract by Hillsborough County Public Schools to demolish and rebuild Stewart Middle Magnet School in Tampa, Florida, creating a shared, modern campus with the neighbouring Just Elementary School that will include over 12,500 square meters of educational space, shared facilities such as a cafeteria and media center, and the preservation and upgrading of the historic gymnasium, with construction running from February 2026 to early 2028.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 9-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska has secured a major education infrastructure project in Tampa, Florida, after signing a USD 77 million (approximately SEK 720 million) contract with Hillsborough County Public Schools for the reconstruction of Stewart Middle Magnet School. The order will be recorded in Skanska’s US order bookings for the first quarter of 2026.

The scope of the project involves the complete demolition of the existing Stewart Middle Magnet School and the development of a modern, purpose-built facility designed to function as a shared educational campus alongside the neighbouring Just Elementary School. The new campus will be structured to support both middle and elementary students while fostering collaboration and resource efficiency between the two institutions.

Once completed, the overall development will deliver more than 12,500 square meters of new educational space. The rebuilt Stewart Middle Magnet School will accommodate more than 1,000 students, while the adjacent Just Elementary School will provide capacity for over 530 pupils. To enhance functionality and integration, the two schools will share key communal facilities, including a centrally located cafeteria and a modern media center.

In recognition of the school’s heritage, the original Stewart Middle Magnet School gymnasium will be preserved on site rather than demolished. This historic structure will undergo targeted upgrades, including new lighting installations and improvements to ensure compliance with current building codes and safety regulations, allowing it to continue serving students as part of the revitalized campus.

Site preparation and construction activities are scheduled to commence in February 2026. Skanska anticipates completing the project in the first quarter of 2028, delivering a state-of-the-art educational environment that meets contemporary standards for learning, accessibility and sustainability.
