SEAT & CUPRA Begins Battery System Production in Martorell Advancing Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and European Mobility Transition

(IN BRIEF) SEAT & CUPRA has started series production of battery systems at its Martorell plant, a key milestone in its transition to electric mobility and preparation for the launch of the CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo. The facility, capable of producing up to 300,000 batteries annually, uses Volkswagen Group’s Unified Cell technology and integrates advanced manufacturing processes to ensure efficiency and quality. Designed as a flexible and sustainable production hub, the plant features significant automation and solar energy generation, covering 70% of its power needs. This development strengthens Spain’s role in Europe’s electric vehicle ecosystem and supports the broader strategy of expanding accessible electric mobility across the region.

(PRESS RELEASE) MARTORELL, 26-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — SEAT & CUPRA has begun series production of battery systems at its Martorell facility, marking a major milestone in the company’s transition toward electrification and the next phase of electric vehicle manufacturing. The batteries produced at the site will power the upcoming CUPRA Raval as well as the Volkswagen ID. Polo, both of which will be manufactured at the plant.

This development represents a critical step ahead of the launch of the CUPRA Raval, the first model in the Brand Group Core’s Electric Urban Car Family, scheduled to reach the market in summer 2026. With the start of battery system production, the Martorell plant is evolving into a highly flexible manufacturing hub capable of producing electric, hybrid and efficient combustion vehicles.

At the centre of the battery systems is the Volkswagen Group’s Unified Cell, a standardized technology platform designed to enable scalability and flexibility across different brands, markets and vehicle segments. The battery systems combine energy storage cells with advanced electronic components that manage and optimize performance. A key element, the E Box, serves as the control unit for the battery system and is produced at SEAT & CUPRA’s El Prat Components facility, reflecting the transformation of traditional manufacturing sites toward electric vehicle technologies.

The battery assembly plant has the capacity to produce up to 1,200 battery systems per day, equivalent to around 300,000 units annually, with a production rate of one battery every 45 seconds. The manufacturing process begins with the supply of components from the logistics warehouse, followed by parallel operations involving the pre-assembly of electrical systems and the stacking of battery cells using advanced cell-to-pack technology. These processes result in thousands of battery stacks daily, supported by extensive precision welding.

Once assembled, each battery system undergoes rigorous quality and safety testing before being transferred via a 600-metre automated bridge directly to the vehicle production lines. This integrated process ensures a seamless and continuous supply aligned with vehicle manufacturing operations.

The facility, covering 64,000 square metres, has been developed in less than two years and combines advanced automation with skilled manual work, supported by approximately 500 employees. Sustainability is a key feature of the plant, with 11,000 solar panels installed on the roof supplying around 70% of the energy required for battery assembly, significantly reducing its environmental footprint.

The start of production at Martorell strengthens the role of the Iberian Peninsula as a key hub for electric mobility within Europe. As part of the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core, SEAT & CUPRA is contributing to the development of a new generation of electric vehicles designed to make sustainable mobility more accessible across the continent.

With the launch of the CUPRA Raval, the company is entering a new era, positioning itself at the forefront of electric vehicle production and reinforcing its commitment to innovation, sustainability and industrial transformation.
