(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÉFENSE, 4-Jun-2024— /EuropaWire/ — On the 30th of May 2024, PT Len Industri (Persero) and Thales solidified their collaboration with the signing of a significant Joint Venture (JV) agreement, aiming to propel Indonesia’s defense capabilities to new heights. The agreement, witnessed by Mr. Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Deputy Minister, Pascale Sourisse, President and CEO of Thales International, and Fabien Penone, French Ambassador in Indonesia, underscores a pivotal moment in Indonesia’s defense industry landscape.

The JV is set to establish a pioneering Centre of Excellence, a first in Indonesia, initially focusing on enhancing the Indonesian Air Force’s airspace protection capabilities through air surveillance solutions. This strategic partnership is designed to be flexible, with plans for expansion into various other critical areas such as C4ISR, Military Satellites, Electronic Warfare, National Data Links, and National Combat Management Systems.

Marking two years since the inception of DEFEND ID, PT Len Industri (Persero) and Thales celebrated the milestone with the signing ceremony in Jakarta. Bobby Rasyidin, President Director for PT Len Industri (Persero) Holding DEFEND ID, and Nicolas Bouverot, Vice President Thales Asia, penned the agreement, symbolizing a commitment to mutual growth and innovation.

The JV will kick-start operations with a focus on addressing the Indonesian Air Force’s requirements, particularly in air operations, encompassing collaboration on air surveillance radars and Command & Control (C2) systems. Thales will leverage its extensive experience in radar technology, facilitating knowledge transfer to strengthen Indonesia’s defense capabilities. Additionally, the JV will encompass Command and Control activities and co-development of a national Air Operations Centre, with associated services like Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) conducted at PT Len’s facilities in Subang.

For Thales, the JV signifies a strategic step towards bolstering its local industrial presence, providing localized engineering, maintenance, and services to enhance operational readiness. This move aligns with Indonesia’s “Made-in-Indonesia” strategy, fostering sovereign capabilities and supporting DEFEND ID’s objective of promoting locally-manufactured components for global export.

Bobby Rasyidin, President Director of PT Len Industri (Persero) Holding DEFEND ID, expressed enthusiasm about expanding the partnership with Thales, foreseeing collaborative ventures that deliver advanced technology and value to the Indonesian defense industry. Pascale Sourisse, President & CEO of Thales International, echoed Rasyidin’s sentiments, emphasizing the JV’s potential to fortify Indonesia’s indigenous defense capabilities through a synergistic blend of technological expertise and local insights.
