Potsdam Launches Stadler TRAMLINK Trams in Regular Service to Strengthen Sustainable Urban Mobility

(IN BRIEF) ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam has introduced Stadler’s new TRAMLINK trams into regular passenger service after successful testing and approval, with the first two vehicles now operating from a total order of 13. The new trams offer increased capacity, improved accessibility, and enhanced passenger comfort compared with the previous fleet, accommodating up to 246 passengers in a modern, step-free interior. Featuring energy-efficient systems, wide doors, and passenger-focused design elements, the TRAMLINK vehicles support Potsdam’s transition toward more sustainable and efficient urban mobility.

(PRESS RELEASE) VALENCIA / BERLIN, 19-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam GmbH has officially placed Stadler’s new TRAMLINK trams into regular passenger service following the successful completion of testing and technical approval procedures. The rollout signals a major step forward for public transport in Potsdam, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainable, modern urban mobility in Brandenburg’s capital.

The first two vehicles from an order of 13 TRAMLINK trams have now begun daily operations across the network. Their introduction marks the start of a fleet renewal programme aimed at increasing capacity, improving passenger comfort, and reducing the environmental footprint of public transport services in the city.

Bettina Biffi, Commercial Managing Director of ViP, said the launch represents a meaningful upgrade for local transport users. She highlighted that the new trams will provide residents and visitors with a reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible mode of travel while enhancing the overall quality of urban mobility in Potsdam.

From the manufacturer’s perspective, Stadler emphasised the technical and passenger-focused advantages of the TRAMLINK platform. Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Division Germany, noted that the vehicles are designed to combine high levels of comfort, accessibility, and energy efficiency, supporting Potsdam’s broader sustainability objectives and long-term transport strategy.

The 42-metre-long TRAMLINK trams are significantly longer than the previous Variobahn vehicles, offering space for up to 246 passengers, including 74 seated. Eight wide doors enable fast boarding and alighting, helping to improve dwell times at stops. Inside, the bright and spacious design features step-free access throughout, creating a comfortable environment for all users.

The interior layout has been developed with different passenger needs in mind. Dedicated parent-child seating areas support families, four multifunctional zones accommodate strollers and other bulky items, and two clearly defined areas are designed for wheelchair users. Energy-efficient climate control systems automatically adjust to passenger numbers, while LED door indicators enhance safety and clarity during boarding. Additional features such as USB charging points, a modern passenger information system, and an innovative bogie design with continuous axles contribute to a smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride.

With the TRAMLINK trams now in service, Potsdam is making a long-term investment in a public transport system that prioritises sustainability, inclusivity, and passenger comfort, supporting the city’s mobility needs well into the future.
