New Saint-Gobain plant in Quebec sets benchmark for carbon-free plasterboard production

(IN BRIEF) Saint-Gobain has inaugurated its CertainTeed plasterboard plant in Sainte-Catherine, near Montreal, establishing the first zero-carbon (scope 1 and 2) plasterboard plant in North America and the largest worldwide to run entirely on electricity. Powered by renewable hydroelectricity, the modernized facility adds a new production line, increases output capacity by 40%, and reduces energy consumption by 30%, cutting CO₂ emissions by 44,000 tons annually. CEO Mark Rayfield emphasized the plant’s importance in meeting Canada’s demand for sustainable solutions and accelerating the company’s growth in the region. The site is Saint-Gobain’s second fully electrified plasterboard plant after Fredrikstad, Norway, and forms part of the company’s long-term commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

(PRESS RELEASE) COURBEVOIE, 26-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Saint-Gobain has officially inaugurated its fully electrified CertainTeed plasterboard plant in Sainte-Catherine, near Montreal, Canada, marking a global milestone for sustainable construction. The facility is the first zero-carbon (scope 1 and 2) plasterboard plant in North America and the largest in the world to be powered entirely by electricity, supplied through Quebec’s renewable hydroelectric grid.

The investment includes the launch of a new production line and the modernization of existing equipment, which together have boosted the site’s production capacity by 40% while simultaneously reducing energy use by 30%. These improvements are expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 44,000 tons annually.

“This ambitious project strengthens our leadership position in light construction in Canada and meets the strong local demand for sustainable solutions. It accelerates our growth in the country, where we have tripled in size in just three years,” said Mark Rayfield, CEO of Saint-Gobain North America.

The Sainte-Catherine facility is now Saint-Gobain’s second fully electrified plasterboard plant, following the company’s pioneering site in Fredrikstad, Norway, inaugurated in 2023. Both projects underscore the Group’s determination to decarbonise its industrial footprint and reflect its broader strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

By combining renewable power with advanced production efficiency, the new Canadian site not only addresses the growing demand for sustainable building materials but also positions Saint-Gobain as a global leader in delivering low-carbon construction solutions.
