Kapsch TrafficCom Launches Innovative Tolling System in Bizkaia, Spain, Enhancing Traffic Flow and Sustainability

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom has successfully implemented a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system in the Bizkaia region of Spain, activated on July 1, 2024. This innovative system processes over 1.4 million transactions daily and significantly enhances traffic management by eliminating traditional toll barriers. The project, which includes 26 gantries covering 146 lanes along major routes, not only completed ahead of schedule but also expanded its scope by adding additional gantries. The installation at Rontegi Bridge was a notable challenge due to high traffic, yet it was completed overnight without road closures. The MLFF technology, which electronically collects toll data, is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is built for reliability with redundancy in critical components.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 9-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom proudly announces the successful implementation of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system in the Bizkaia region, officially activated on July 1. This innovative solution is set to revolutionize traffic management, processing an impressive 1.4 million transactions daily.

Initially awarded the project by Interbiak in 2022, Kapsch TrafficCom not only completed the installation on schedule but also expanded the system’s capacity by adding an extra ten gantries. This enhancement brings the total number of gantries to 26, covering 146 lanes across various key routes. The truck tolling system operates along several critical sections, including the A-8 towards Cantabria, the N-636 from Beasain to Durango via Kanzapar, and the N-637 from Cruces to Erletxes in northern Spain.

The comprehensive system integrates advanced gantries, cameras, sensors, and all necessary hardware and software to ensure seamless operation. Additionally, Kapsch TrafficCom has secured a maintenance contract for levels 2 and 3, which will be in effect until June 2026.

In an exciting development, the project also includes the installation of three Roadside Units designed for Connected Vehicle Use Cases, building on the 25 units already operational in the Bizkaia C-ITS corridor. This expansion further enhances the smart corridor’s capabilities, ensuring safer and more efficient traffic management in the area.

Overcoming Project Challenges

The installation at Rontegi Bridge posed significant challenges due to its status as a high-traffic area, with approximately 180,000 vehicles passing daily. Remarkably, the gantry installation—spanning over 40 meters and covering four lanes in each direction—was completed overnight without any road closures. “I am immensely proud of our team for executing this complex project on time,” remarked Javier Aguirre, Managing Director of Kapsch TrafficCom Spain and Portugal.

A Reliable and Eco-Friendly Solution

The MLFF technology distinguishes itself from traditional toll systems by electronically and automatically collecting toll data, which significantly enhances traffic flow. With no barriers to slow vehicles down, this system also contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The unique gantry design employed by Kapsch TrafficCom integrates all necessary sensors and equipment into a single structure, promoting efficiency and scalability.

The design is not only flexible but also features built-in redundancy for all critical components, ensuring the system’s reliability and establishing it as one of the most dependable tolling solutions available on the market today.
