Inge Herrmann Joins Balgrist University Hospital and University of Zurich to Spearhead Medical Technology Innovations

(IN BRIEF) Inge Herrmann, a renowned expert in medical technology, has been appointed to the academic team at Balgrist University Hospital and the University of Zurich. Herrmann, previously a professor at ETH Zurich and Empa, will continue her research and teaching responsibilities while establishing the Ingenuity Lab at Balgrist. This lab specializes in developing innovative medical materials and technologies for orthopedic soft tissue research. The lab will collaborate closely with clinical teams at Balgrist University Hospital and research groups at Empa and ETH Zurich to create technology-based solutions addressing critical medical challenges. Research areas include tissue bonding technologies for minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery, surgical adhesives with integrated sensors for early infection detection, and treatment methods for radiation-resistant soft tissue tumors and antimicrobial resistance. This partnership strengthens Balgrist’s position as a leading center for orthopedic research and treatment in Europe.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜBENDORF, 17-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Balgrist University Hospital and the University of Zurich have appointed Inge Herrmann, a leading expert in the field of medical technology, to their academic team. She was previously a professor at ETH Zurich and Empa, where she will continue to carry out research and teaching duties. At Balgrist, Herrmann established the Ingenuity Lab specializing in innovative developments in the fields of medical materials and technologies with the aim of applications in orthopaedic soft tissue research.

The Ingenuity Lab will advance innovative research and development in the areas of materials, diagnostic devices and therapeutic applications in orthopaedics. Among other things, the team is working on new tissue bonding technologies for minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery. Surgical adhesives with integrated sensors are to be used to detect infections and other complications at an early stage. Another focus of the Ingenuity Lab is research into new treatment methods for radiation-resistant soft tissue tumors and antimicrobial resistance.

Under the leadership of Inge Herrmann, the lab’s research groups will work closely with the clinical teams at Balgrist University Hospital as well as with research groups at Empa and ETH Zurich to develop technology-based solutions that are directly tailored to the greatest medical challenges. Inge Hermann: “Our vision for the Ingenuity Lab is to develop novel solutions that directly address the most urgent needs of MDs, nurses and patients. In doing so, we want to push the boundaries of medical technology. The combination of clinical excellence and innovative research is crucial to developing the next generation of medical solutions. The Ingenuity Lab aims to harness these synergies and provides a platform where scientists, engineers and physicians can work together to shape the medicine and medical technology of tomorrow.”

Balgrist University Hospital is renowned for its outstanding patient care and its commitment to medical research and education. With the opening of the Ingenuity Lab, a few months after the OR-X, the clinic will further strengthen its position as one of the leading centers for orthopaedic research and treatment in Europe. “We are delighted to welcome Inge Herrmann and the Ingenuity Lab to Balgrist. This partnership underlines our commitment to innovation and excellence in musculoskeletal medicine,” says Mazda Farshad, Balgrist University Hospital’s Medical Director.
