FuelEU Maritime Pooling Gains Momentum as Gasum Leverages Bio LNG to Support Sustainable Shipping Operations

(IN BRIEF) Gasum is extending its FuelEU Maritime pooling partnerships with Viking Line and Wallenius SOL into 2026, leveraging bio-LNG-powered vessels to generate surplus compliance units due to their negative emissions profile. The collaboration supports both environmental goals and regulatory compliance, with dual-fuel vessels offering operational flexibility. The pooling mechanism under FuelEU Maritime enables companies exceeding emissions targets to offset others within the same pool, creating a balanced and efficient system for reducing maritime emissions. By producing its own bio-LNG and operating additional vessels within the pool, Gasum strengthens the reliability of its offering while contributing to broader decarbonization efforts across European shipping.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 19-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, a Nordic energy company, is continuing its FuelEU Maritime pooling collaborations with shipping operators Viking Line and Wallenius SOL into 2026, reinforcing joint efforts to reduce emissions across the maritime sector. The partnerships are centered on the use of bio-LNG-powered vessels, which contribute compliance units to Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool due to their exceptionally low—and even negative—emissions profile.

Both Viking Line and Wallenius SOL operate dual-fuel vessels capable of running on either conventional LNG or bio-LNG, allowing flexibility in fuel selection while maintaining environmental performance. By utilizing Gasum’s bio-LNG, produced from organic waste such as livestock manure, the vessels achieve emissions reductions that exceed 100 percent, effectively generating a surplus of compliance units under the FuelEU Maritime framework.

Jacob Granqvist, Vice President of Maritime at Gasum, emphasized the importance of maintaining long-term pooling partnerships, noting that collaboration with both companies supports shared emission reduction goals while ensuring a stable and dependable compliance solution. He also highlighted that Gasum’s ability to produce and source its own bio-LNG enhances the reliability of its pooling services.

From Viking Line’s perspective, the pooling arrangement provides both regulatory compliance and financial predictability. Mats Engblom, Senior Vice President of Finance, stated that combining FuelEU Maritime compliance with cost stability is essential for fleet management. He added that bio-LNG represents not only an environmentally responsible choice but also a strategic approach to managing long-term regulatory exposure.

Henrik Karle, Fleet Director and Chief Technical Officer at Wallenius SOL, described the partnership with Gasum as a key enabler of the company’s sustainability objectives. He noted that the use of bio-LNG, alongside pooling mechanisms, offers a structured and dependable path to meeting regulatory requirements while delivering measurable environmental benefits.

In addition to collaborating with external partners, Gasum also contributes to its FuelEU pool by operating its own bunkering and transport fleet on bio-LNG, further increasing the availability of compliance units within the system.

FuelEU Maritime, introduced by the European Union and implemented in 2025, is designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by setting limits on the carbon intensity of marine fuels. The regulation includes a pooling mechanism that allows vessels using low- or zero-emission fuels to generate surplus compliance units. These units can then offset emissions from other vessels within the same pool, creating flexibility for operators while encouraging wider adoption of cleaner energy solutions across the maritime industry.
