Fortum Battery Recycling reorganises business structure to accelerate growth and strengthen European battery materials strategy

(IN BRIEF) Fortum Battery Recycling has introduced a refreshed operating model and leadership structure aimed at accelerating growth and enhancing service for the European battery industry. The new framework centres the business around three operational areas — Battery Recycling Services, Battery Raw Materials, and Technology & Growth — supported by a new Strategic Partnerships function focused on collaboration and investment. The leadership team remains led by Anssi Airas, with existing management roles maintained. In January 2026, Pekka Alisaari will join as Director of Strategic Partnerships, strengthening Fortum’s capability to build closed-loop battery material solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 9-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Fortum Battery Recycling has announced a new organisational structure and operating model designed to accelerate growth and strengthen its position in Europe’s evolving battery materials value chain. The updated model clarifies reporting lines and strategic focus areas, ensuring resources are aligned with long-term expansion plans and the company’s ambition to play a central role in supporting closed-loop solutions for the battery industry.

Going forward, the business will be built around three core operational pillars:

  1. Battery Recycling Services – delivering mechanical recycling to customers across Europe

  2. Battery Raw Materials – responsible for hydrometallurgical processes and the production of recycled battery chemicals

  3. Technology & Growth – driving technology development, strategic planning and investment programmes

Alongside these areas, Fortum is establishing a dedicated Strategic Partnerships function, tasked with developing collaboration models, securing investment funding, and advancing partnerships that enable circular material flows. This new function is expected to play a key role in expanding Fortum’s customer ecosystem and supporting industrial-scale recycling capacity across Europe.

The leadership team remains under the direction of Anssi Airas, Head of Battery Recycling, who continues to lead the division. The management group also includes Jaakko Soini (Technology & Growth), Teemu Koivunen (Battery Raw Materials), Frank Stumpf (Battery Recycling Services), Julius Kirkkola (Enabling Functions), and Celine Fogde (Senior People Partner).

As part of the strengthened organisation, Pekka Alisaari will join as Director, Strategic Partnerships in January 2026. His background in EV battery supply chain strategy and battery material commercialisation will support Fortum’s ambition to become a leading European producer of recycled battery raw materials.
