Deutsche Post supports global initiative for a delivery person emoji to represent millions of postal and parcel workers worldwide

(IN BRIEF) Deutsche Post is supporting a global initiative led by Austrian Post to introduce a new “delivery person” emoji, representing over 5.3 million workers in the postal and parcel industry worldwide. Backed by major organizations such as UPU, IPC, and UNI Global Union, the proposal is now under review by the Unicode Consortium in California. If approved, the emoji could launch globally in 2026 across platforms like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Deutsche Post’s announcement coincides with World Post Day, emphasizing the essential role of delivery professionals and the need for greater recognition of their contributions in both the real and digital worlds.

(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 8-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Post has announced its support for an application submitted by Austrian Post to the Unicode Consortium in Mountain View, California, to introduce a new emoji representing postal and parcel delivery professionals. The initiative aims to give visibility to approximately 5.3 million employees in the global postal sector and millions more in the courier, express, and parcel (CEP) industry.

Despite the existence of more than 3,800 emojis covering emotions, activities, and numerous professions, the role of the postal and parcel delivery person has so far been overlooked. This new emoji seeks to honor the everyday contributions of delivery professionals who connect people and businesses around the world. The proposal has received strong international backing, with support from the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the International Post Corporation (IPC), and numerous national postal organizations across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Benjamin Rasch, Head of Marketing for the German Postal and Parcel Division of DHL Group, emphasized the significance of this initiative:

“Whether it’s the joy of receiving a personal letter, sending important documents, or awaiting a parcel, delivery professionals are an essential part of daily life worldwide. The creation of a delivery emoji gives billions of people the chance to express their appreciation and connection to those who deliver in all weather conditions. It’s time to give them a digital face of their own.”

The Unicode Consortium, responsible for managing the global standard of emojis, will evaluate all submissions until November 2025 before selecting candidates for design and development. If approved, the delivery person emoji could appear on smartphones and digital platforms globally in 2026, designed by major technology providers such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and WhatsApp.

The initiative, celebrated on the occasion of World Post Day (October 9), symbolizes the collective pride and solidarity of the postal community. The proposal has also gained the endorsement of the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain, and Portugal (UPAEP), UNI Global Union, and postal companies from Egypt, Ireland, Latvia, Poland, Switzerland, Slovakia, and Slovenia, joining Austrian Post as the leading advocate of the movement.

This collective effort highlights the unifying power of postal services across nations — a reminder that behind every package and letter stands a human connection worth recognizing, both in reality and in digital communication.
