Borussia Dortmund and RWE Unite for Landmark Sustainability Initiative at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK

(IN BRIEF) Borussia Dortmund and RWE have entered a six-year partnership to enhance sustainability at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, Germany’s largest football stadium. The collaboration includes installing the largest photovoltaic (PV) system on a stadium roof in Germany, with over 9,500 solar panels and a battery storage facility. The system will generate enough green electricity to cover the stadium’s energy needs for all home matches, with excess power fed into the grid. The partnership represents a significant step toward sustainability for both organizations.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 23-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Borussia Dortmund and RWE have announced a groundbreaking six-year partnership focused on transforming SIGNAL IDUNA PARK into a beacon of sustainability. As part of this collaboration, RWE will develop and implement an advanced energy optimization strategy for the stadium, which includes installing the largest photovoltaic (PV) system on any stadium roof in Germany.

The new system will feature over 9,500 solar panels with a combined capacity exceeding 4.2 megawatts peak. This ambitious project will not only meet the energy needs of the stadium during all home matches but also contribute excess green electricity to the power grid. Additionally, the system will be equipped with a 3.4-megawatt-hour battery storage unit to ensure a continuous supply of clean energy, even when the sun isn’t shining.

This partnership has already seen the installation of a new PV system on the roof of Borussia Dortmund Fan World, and future collaborative energy projects are planned to further enhance the club’s sustainability efforts.

Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE AG, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Collaborating with Borussia Dortmund, a club that holds immense regional and European significance, is an exciting opportunity. Together, we aim to set a new standard for sustainable energy use in sports.”

Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Borussia Dortmund, added, “Our partnership with RWE is a crucial step in our sustainability journey. By working together on these innovative energy projects, we are committed to making a meaningful impact on climate protection and advancing sustainable practices.”
