RWE and TotalEnergies Join Forces to Develop 4 GW Offshore Wind Projects in Germany

(IN BRIEF) RWE and TotalEnergies have partnered to develop two large-scale offshore wind projects off the German coast, each with a capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW). TotalEnergies will acquire a 50% stake in both projects, following RWE’s successful bid in Germany’s offshore wind auction. Investment decisions are planned for 2027 and 2028, with construction set to begin in 2029 and 2030. The collaboration builds on the companies’ existing partnership in the OranjeWind project in the Netherlands and aims to support Germany’s energy transition. RWE plans to triple its global offshore wind capacity by 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 7-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE and TotalEnergies have announced a partnership to develop two major offshore wind projects off the German coast, with a combined capacity of 4 gigawatts (GW). TotalEnergies will acquire a 50% stake in both projects, following RWE’s successful bid in Germany’s recent offshore wind auction. These projects, located about 110 to 115 kilometers northwest of the island of Borkum, will each generate 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy. Investment decisions for the sites, named N-9.1 and N-9.2, are expected by 2027 and 2028, respectively, with construction set to begin in 2029 and full commissioning planned for 2031 and 2032.

This collaboration builds on the successful partnership between the two companies in the OranjeWind offshore project in the Netherlands. RWE’s CEO of Offshore Wind, Sven Utermöhlen, expressed confidence in the collaboration, highlighting RWE’s extensive experience in offshore wind. Olivier Jouny, SVP Renewables at TotalEnergies, emphasized the significance of the German electricity market and how these projects will contribute to decarbonizing Germany’s energy and industrial sectors.

RWE, already operating six offshore wind farms in Germany, is also constructing four more, including the 1.6 GW Nordseecluster. The company’s global offshore wind capacity currently stands at 3.3 GW, with plans to expand it to 10 GW by 2030.
