RWE Chooses Thyborøn Port as Base for Groundbreaking Thor Offshore Wind Farm Project

(IN BRIEF) RWE has chosen Thyborøn Port as the base for Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, Thor, with construction starting in 2025. This project, featuring 72 turbines, will provide green energy for over a million Danish households by 2027, supporting RWE’s global offshore wind expansion.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 9-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has announced that Thyborøn Port will serve as the offshore construction base for its 1.1 GW Thor offshore wind farm, Denmark’s largest to date. Located in the North Sea off Jutland’s coast, the project will use Thyborøn as the central hub for service vessels, marine logistics, and secondary steel structure handling, with Buss Ports overseeing port logistics and handling on a dedicated 100,000-square-meter area. Offshore construction for Thor is set to start in spring 2025, with full commissioning expected by 2027, providing enough green energy to power over a million Danish households.

Erik Flyvholm, Mayor of Lemvig Kommune, highlighted the selection of Thyborøn as a testament to the port’s capability to support North Sea offshore operations. The facility’s new heavy-duty quayside storage and custom-built infrastructure will serve as a key support base for RWE’s operations. Buss Ports COO, Morten Lund, expressed pride in partnering with RWE for this ambitious project.

Additional Danish ports will support various phases of the Thor project, including turbine installation from the Port of Esbjerg beginning in 2026 and ongoing operations and maintenance from the Port of Thorsminde, which will create up to 60 local jobs.

RWE, a major player in the global offshore wind sector, currently operates 19 offshore wind farms and is in the process of building three other large-scale projects in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, with a goal to expand its offshore capacity from 3.3 GW to 10 GW by 2030.
