(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 27-Jun-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF’s Coatings division achieved significant recognition for its innovative automotive paint, ZENOMENON, which was the only automotive paint to win this year at the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design. The award, celebrated globally as a benchmark for exceptional design, was given in the “Materials and Surfaces” category, where ZENOMENON’s unique formulation and aesthetic qualities impressed the expert jury.

Developed in collaboration with California-based Cypris Materials, ZENOMENON utilizes special polymer structures that incorporate a high proportion of renewable materials, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional automotive coatings. The color effect of ZENOMENON is achieved through self-assembled layered structures that reflect light to create a shimmering, iridescent shine. This innovative approach not only enhances the visual appeal but is also compatible with future mobility technologies like LIDAR and radar sensor systems.

Mark Gutjahr, BASF’s global head of Automotive Color Design, expressed pride in the recognition, noting it as a testament to BASF’s prowess in design and technology, as well as its commitment to innovative solutions in the automotive industry. The Red Dot Design Award evaluates entries based on their functionality, seductiveness, usability, and responsibility, with ZENOMENON standing out for its forward-looking development that merges aesthetics with sustainability and functionality.

The award-winning ZENOMENON will be featured along with other recognized products at the Red Dot Design Museum, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen, Germany, until May 2025, showcasing the intersection of innovative material science and striking design in automotive coatings.
