ANDRITZ to supply emission-reduction systems for TVA’s Shawnee Fossil Plant in Kentucky

(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has received a mid double-digit million-euro contract from the Tennessee Valley Authority to supply two advanced Spray Dry Absorbers for the Shawnee Fossil Plant in Kentucky. The units, designed for Boiler 8 and 9, will reduce SO₂/SO₃ and HCl emissions and work with existing filtration systems to meet stringent U.S. environmental regulations including the EPA Regional Haze Rule. The project adds to two ANDRITZ SDAs already running at the plant since 2017. TVA says the investment supports continued reliable energy supply for the Tennessee Valley, while ANDRITZ highlights its contribution to cleaner air and operational sustainability.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 9-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — ANDRITZ has been selected by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to supply new flue gas treatment technology for the Shawnee Fossil Plant in Paducah, Kentucky, advancing emissions reduction efforts at one of TVA’s key generating assets. The upgrade will enhance environmental performance and ensure long-term compliance with U.S. regulatory standards.

The contract — valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range and recorded in ANDRITZ’s Q3 2025 order intake — covers the delivery of two high-efficiency Spray Dry Absorber (SDA) systems for Boiler Units 8 and 9. Designed to remove sulfur oxides (SO₂/SO₃), hydrogen chloride (HCl) and other acid gases, the SDAs will work in conjunction with the plant’s downstream baghouse filters to capture pollutants before release.

These new units will operate alongside two existing ANDRITZ SDAs installed on Units 1 and 4 in 2017, extending TVA’s emissions control capabilities and supporting compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Regional Haze Rule, which sets strict air-quality requirements for fossil-fueled generation.

Harald Prieler, Vice President of the Clean Air Technologies division at ANDRITZ, commented:
“We are pleased to continue working with TVA on projects that improve air quality and strengthen sustainability performance. This installation will help ensure cleaner operations while supporting the utility’s long-term reliability goals.”

Dan Tibbs, TVA Vice President of Projects and Outage Management, added:
“For more than 70 years, Shawnee has been instrumental in delivering affordable, reliable power to the Tennessee Valley. This new investment reinforces our ability to meet growing demand while managing our environmental responsibilities.”

The new systems form part of TVA’s ongoing modernization program to support efficient, lower-emission power generation within the region.
