Amazon Secures Record Order of 200+ Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 Trucks for Sustainable Logistics in Europe

(IN BRIEF) Amazon has placed its largest-ever order of electric trucks, selecting over 200 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 vehicles. This marks the largest electric truck order in Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ history. The trucks will be deployed across Amazon’s middle-mile network in Germany and the UK, expected to transport over 350 million packages annually. This decision follows successful testing of a prototype in Amazon’s logistics centers. Amazon aims to lead the electrification of its European transportation network as part of its broader commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEINFELDEN-ECHTERDINGEN/ MUNICH/ LONDON, 14-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Amazon has made a significant move towards decarbonizing its transportation network by placing its largest-ever order of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). The company has selected over 200 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks, marking the largest order in the history of Mercedes-Benz Trucks for electric vehicles. The eActros 600 trucks will play a crucial role in Amazon’s logistics operations in Germany and the UK, joining its existing fleet in 2025. These zero-emission vehicles are expected to transport over 350 million packages annually, contributing to Amazon’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

The trucks will be deployed on high-mileage routes within Amazon’s middle-mile network, transporting cargo between fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations. With more than 140 trucks allocated to the UK and over 50 to Germany, the eActros 600s will be vital in Amazon’s strategy to electrify its European transportation network.

This milestone follows extensive testing of a near-production prototype of the eActros 600 in one of Amazon’s German logistics centers, which provided valuable insights ahead of full-scale production. Karin Rådström, Chairwoman of the Board of Management at Daimler Truck AG, expressed her delight at the partnership, stating, “We are very pleased that Amazon, a pioneer in the transformation towards alternative drives, has chosen the eActros 600, a gamechanger for sustainable transportation.”

Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ Head of Marketing, Sales, and Services, Stina Fagerman, also highlighted the significance of Amazon’s order, noting, “Amazon is an important customer for us on the path towards CO2-neutral transport. The insights from Amazon’s trials of the eActros 600 have been invaluable in refining the vehicle ahead of series production.”

Andreas Marschner, Vice President of Worldwide Operations Sustainability at Amazon, emphasized the importance of the order, saying, “The purchase of over 200 eActros 600 trucks demonstrates our commitment to electrifying our transportation network in Europe. This is the largest electric heavy truck order Amazon has made globally and is a key step toward meeting our Climate Pledge goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.”

About the eActros 600

The high battery capacity of over 600 kilowatt hours[1] – hence the model designation 600 – and a new, particularly efficient electric drive axle developed in-house enable the electric truck to achieve a range of 500 kilometers[2] without intermediate charging. This range is accomplished under very realistic and practical conditions with a gross combination mass of 40 tons, which can also be significantly exceeded depending on the driving style and the route. The eActros 600 will even be able to cover well over 1,000 kilometers per day. Intermediate charging during statutory driver breaks – even without megawatt charging (MCS) – makes this possible, provided that charging options are available. In addition to CCS charging with up to 400 kW, the eActros 600 will later also enable megawatt charging.

Visually, the long-haul electric truck is characterized by a fundamentally new, minimalist design with clear lines and an aerodynamic shape. In terms of profitability for fleet operators, the electric truck will set new standards and replace the majority of diesel trucks in the important long-distance transport segment in the long term. The core of the Mercedes-Benz Trucks concept for battery-powered long-distance haulage is to offer customers a holistic transportation solution comprising vehicle technology, consulting, a charging infrastructure, and services with the new TruckCharge brand.

The electric flagship from Mercedes-Benz Trucks has already proven its capabilities several times under real-life conditions: In customer use and as part of the “eActros 600 European Testing Tour 2024”, a 15,000 kilometers all-electric development trip through a total of 22 countries with a gross combination mass of 40 tons. In addition, the e-truck was voted “International Truck of the Year 2025”. The award is the most important prize in the industry and is presented annually by the International Truck of the Year (IToY) organisation, consisting of 24 commercial vehicle journalists from Europe. The eActros 600 has been in series production at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Wörth am Rhein since the end of 2024.

[1] The eActros 600 has three battery packs, each with 207 kWh. These offer an installed total capacity of 621 kWh. Nominal capacity of new battery, based on internally defined boundary conditions, may vary depending on use case and ambient conditions.

[2] The range was determined internally under specific test conditions, after preconditioning with a 4×2 tractor unit with a 40 tons total towing weight at 20°C outside temperature in long-haul operation and may deviate from the values determined in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2017/2400.
