(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 19-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY announces its collaboration with Nexans to provide consulting support for the Gotland Connection project, commissioned by Svenska Kraftnät. The project, aimed at addressing the growing electricity demand on Gotland, will play a key role in supporting the island’s industrial growth and renewable energy initiatives.

Svenska Kraftnät, Sweden’s transmission system operator (TSO), is expanding the national grid to Gotland with the installation of two new 220kV HVAC cables. This expansion is necessary to meet the island’s increasing electricity demands, driven by industrial growth and the rise of renewable energy projects.

As part of the project, Nexans, a global leader in electrification, is responsible for the delivery of 320 km of high-voltage subsea and onshore cables. AFRY has been appointed as the advisory partner, offering its expertise to ensure the project’s quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. This includes ensuring alignment with the requirements of Svenska Kraftnät and Swedish laws and regulations.

Fredrik Persson, Global Head of Transmission & Distribution at AFRY, commented, “It is great to collaborate with Nexans on this significant project. By contributing our expertise in high-voltage cable systems, AFRY supports the development of a sustainable and reliable energy supply for Gotland, while also helping to meet Sweden’s growing energy needs.”

The Gotland Connection project is set to begin in the second quarter of 2025, with completion expected by 2030.
