FrieslandCampina to use paper and wood types of packaging material from sustainably managed forests

Amersfoort, the Netherlands, 29-4-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — From now on, FrieslandCampina intends, wherever possible, to use packaging material for its products worldwide that is made from paper and wood types that are demonstrably derived from sustainably managed forests. FrieslandCampina contributes in this way to the global promotion of good forest management and forest preservation for future generations. To this end, Royal FrieslandCampina and PEFC signed on 11 April 2014 “the policy statement sustainably managed forests” . PEFC is an independently recognised quality mark for the endorsement of sustainable forest management.

This decision is the next step in FrieslandCampina’s policy for sustainable procurement of all (agricultural) raw materials. FrieslandCampina packaging materials now bear one of the two sustainability quality marks: the FSC or the PEFC quality mark. With these quality marks FrieslandCampina confirms that the raw materials used for packaging are demonstrably sourced from sustainably managed forests. The preservation of forests is under pressure worldwide despite their inestimable value to humans, animals and plants: 80 per cent of all animal and plant species are dependent on forests.

FrieslandCampina has been using the FSC quality mark since 2011. All primary beverage packaging for the Western European market have since borne this quality mark. Since 2013, FrieslandCampina has purchased only FSC or PEFC certified cardboard outer packaging for the Western European market. This policy will now be extended worldwide.

Strategy route2020
This sustainable approach is integral to FrieslandCampina’s strategy –route2020 – in which the organisation’s sustainability policy is set out. The organisation had already opted earlier on for procurement of sustainably produced soy and palm oil as a participant in the Roundtable on Responsible Soy (RTRS) and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
