Kapsch TrafficCom Expands Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling Deployment on Greece’s Patras–Pyrgos Motorway

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a contract extension by Olympia Odos to deploy and maintain its Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system on the new 65-kilometre Patras–Pyrgos section of Greece’s A5 motorway. The project includes the installation of 14 gantries equipped with VDX camera technology and introduces a hybrid tolling model with a distance-based rebate mechanism. Scheduled to begin in January, the deployment supports safer, faster, and more efficient travel while enhancing connectivity across the Peloponnese region.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 21-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch TrafficCom has secured a contract extension to deploy and technically maintain its Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling solution on the newly built Patras–Pyrgos Motorway in Greece, further expanding its footprint within the country’s strategic road infrastructure. The project was awarded in November 2025 by motorway concessionaire Olympia Odos.

The scope of the project covers a 65-kilometre section of the A5 motorway linking Patras, Greece’s third-largest city, with the historic area of Olympia. The new road is expected to significantly improve connectivity across the Peloponnese peninsula, strengthening access to one of the country’s most important tourist and cultural destinations while easing regional traffic flows.

As part of the contract, Kapsch TrafficCom will install 14 additional toll gantries, extending the existing Multi-Lane Free Flow coverage along the motorway. Each gantry will be equipped with advanced VDX camera technology, enabling a hybrid tolling model that combines traditional toll plazas with free-flow toll collection. This approach allows vehicles to move without stopping, improving safety and reducing congestion.

The system introduces a distance-based rebate mechanism designed to enhance fairness and transparency for road users. Drivers pay for the full motorway section when entering and receive a rebate upon exit based on the actual distance travelled. This model is intended to encourage traffic to shift from secondary roads to high-capacity motorways, improving overall network safety and efficiency.

Project delivery is scheduled to commence in January, with Kapsch TrafficCom also providing third-level technical support to ensure long-term system reliability and operational performance. The MLFF solution is designed to support faster transit times and safer journeys by eliminating bottlenecks associated with conventional toll plazas, making the motorway particularly attractive for frequent regional users.

The Patras–Pyrgos Motorway has recently been completed and is expected to play a central role in improving mobility, accessibility, and economic activity across southern Greece.
