AFRY Drives Future Mobility: Awarded Major Contract for Breganzona Tunnel and Urban Transit Upgrade

(IN BRIEF) AFRY, as a key member of the Tram Ticino consortium, has been awarded a contract by Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese SA to plan the Breganzona tunnel. This development is a crucial element in modernizing Lugano’s public transport network, connecting the city center with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys, and is expected to reduce travel times while promoting sustainable transit. The redesign of the Tram-Treno network aims to increase daily passenger capacity from 7,500 to 20,000. In addition to the tunnel planning, the project includes the creation of an underground intermodal station at Lugano – Railway Station SBB, located 40 meters below the new underpass, which will integrate trams, trains, and buses with regional and national transport systems. With the goal of operational commencement by 2035 and AFRY’s engagement spanning the next decade, the project carries an estimated value of SEK 120 million. Marcel Winter, Country Manager for AFRY in Switzerland, highlighted the firm’s commitment to delivering a complex yet sustainable urban mobility solution.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 4-Apr-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY, working in partnership with the Tram Ticino consortium, has secured the contract from Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese SA (RTTL) to develop plans for the Breganzona tunnel. This new project is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing Lugano’s public transport network by improving inner-city mobility.

The innovative Tram-Treno network is designed to link Lugano’s city center with the Malcantone and Vedeggio valleys, significantly reducing travel times and offering a more sustainable transportation alternative. With plans to boost daily passenger capacity from 7,500 to an anticipated 20,000, the network redesign reflects a strong commitment to meeting future mobility needs.

Within the Tram Ticino consortium, AFRY collaborates with Pini and Lombardi to oversee the detailed planning of the tunnel at Breganzona and manage the related construction works. Marcel Winter, AFRY’s Country Manager in Switzerland, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are excited to leverage our expertise to bring this intricate urban project to fruition, thereby supporting a forward-thinking, sustainable transport solution.”

A key feature of the project is the development of an underground station—Lugano – Railway Station SBB—located 40 meters beneath a new underpass. This station is envisioned as a major intermodal hub, seamlessly connecting trams, trains, the railway system, and city buses to facilitate smooth integration with both regional and national transit networks.

The project aims to launch the first phase of the Tram-Treno network by 2035, with AFRY’s role extending over the next ten years. The contract is valued at an estimated SEK 120 million, marking a significant investment in the future of urban transportation.
