Sweco Joins Elite Alliance to Revolutionize Estonia’s Rail Network

(IN BRIEF) Sweco has been selected as a key partner in the alliance spearheading the Rail Baltica project in Estonia, a major initiative aimed at overhauling the region’s railway network. This selection underscores Sweco’s role in providing high-level expertise in planning, engineering, and sustainable design. The project is envisioned to connect Estonia and other Baltic states with the European standard gauge rail system, facilitating smoother transit and promoting environmental sustainability. By joining forces with other industry leaders, the alliance is positioned to address the multifaceted technical and logistical challenges inherent in such an ambitious undertaking. The project is expected to drive economic development, enhance regional connectivity, and establish new standards for rail infrastructure in the Baltic region.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 14-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Sweco (STO: SWEC-B), a leading engineering and architecture firm, has been chosen to join a project alliance tasked with the design and construction of Section 1 of the Estonian portion of Rail Baltica—a major EU-funded initiative aimed at creating a new high-speed rail corridor connecting the Baltic States to the rest of Europe. This ambitious project, which is slated to continue until 2030, will see the construction of a completely new 213-kilometre stretch of European gauge (1,435 mm) railway track in Estonia, running from Tallinn Ülemiste to Pärnu. The estimated cost for this section is approximately EUR 394 million, while the specific order value for Sweco remains to be determined. The contract will be formalized and additional details finalized once the procurement process and the standstill period are complete.

Rail Baltica is a collaborative transportation endeavor involving the Baltic countries, designed to establish a greenfield railway link that will extend from Tallinn, traverse the Baltic states, and reach Poland. This landmark project is expected to revolutionize regional connectivity and boost the mobility of passengers and goods across Europe.

“I am delighted that Sweco has been selected to contribute to such a transformative project, linking the Baltic nations to the broader European network,” said Åsa Bergman, President and CEO of Sweco. “As a premier European consultancy specializing in transportation, with a team of 6,000 experts dedicated to mobility and active travel, we are deeply involved in various projects driving Europe’s green transition. Our cross-border team is fully prepared to commence work within the Alliance as soon as the procurement process is finalized.”

Financing for Rail Baltica is secured through a combination of European Union funds, national contributions from the Baltic States, and private investments. The EU plays a pivotal role by providing a significant share of the funding through mechanisms such as the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and other regional development programs.
