Liiga and Neste Team Up to Cut Emissions with Renewable Diesel for Hockey Season Travel

(IN BRIEF) Neste and Finland’s ice hockey league, Liiga, have partnered to use Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ for team bus travel during the 2024–2025 season, reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 6,400 tons—equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of 500-600 Finns. This initiative supports Liiga’s sustainability goals, cutting travel emissions by an estimated 90% compared to fossil diesel. Through Neste’s comprehensive reporting system, Liiga can monitor and track emissions reductions, strengthening its commitment to environmental responsibility.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 8-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Neste has partnered with Finland’s national ice hockey league, Liiga, to promote sustainability by switching the majority of Liiga teams* to Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ for bus transportation during the 2024–2025 season. This change from fossil diesel to renewable fuel is expected to significantly cut Liiga’s emissions, with a reduction of about 6,400 tons of CO₂e — roughly equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of 500-600 Finnish citizens.

The Liiga organization has made sustainability a top priority, recognizing that transportation accounts for around 8% of its total emissions, ranking as the fourth-largest source after spectator travel (64%), arenas’ electricity consumption (17%), and heating (11%). By using Neste MY Renewable Diesel, Liiga can cut greenhouse gas emissions from team travel by an estimated 90%*** over the fuel’s lifecycle compared to fossil diesel.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Liiga, setting an inspiring example of how sports can embrace sustainable practices. Neste MY Renewable Diesel offers an immediate solution to reduce emissions from team bus transportation. By 2030, Neste aims to help customers cut at least 20 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually,” said Joni Pihlström, Neste’s Vice President, Marketing & Services.

Neste’s station network also supports Liiga as the official rest stop during the season, providing nearly 190 fueling locations across Finland where teams can easily refuel with Neste MY Renewable Diesel. For tracking purposes, each team’s bus company will use a unique customer number during refueling, allowing Liiga to monitor fuel consumption and emission reductions through the Neste MY Carbon Footprint reporting service.

“Sports can serve as a powerful platform for advancing sustainability and setting an example,” said Vili Nurmi, Sales Director at the Finnish National Ice Hockey League. “Our partnership with Neste enables us to make real strides in reducing travel-related emissions. Having detailed reports from Neste also helps us refine our sustainability strategy for future seasons.”

*) Participating teams include HIFK, HPK, Ilves, Jukurit, KalPa, Kiekko-Espoo, KooKoo, Lukko, Tappara, and Ässät
