(IN BRIEF) Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company (HPWS) received approval in principle (AiP) certificates from DNV at the SMM trade fair for three innovative ship designs focused on sustainability. The designs include an ammonia-fueled midsize gas carrier, an ammonia-fueled container ship, and an LNG dual-fueled ice-class container ship. These advancements align with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization goals for 2050. The partnership between HPWS and DNV, which has been ongoing since 1996, continues to strengthen HPWS’s leadership in green maritime technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 4-Sep-2024— /EuropaWire/ — At the SMM trade fair, Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company (HPWS) has received approval in principle (AiP) certificates from DNV, a leading classification society, for three groundbreaking ship designs that emphasize sustainability and green technology. The awarded designs include an ammonia-fueled midsize gas carrier, an ammonia-fueled container ship, and an LNG dual-fueled ice-class container ship.

The newly approved designs reflect HPWS’s commitment to advancing environmentally friendly maritime solutions in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization targets for 2050. The ammonia-fueled 43,000 cbm midsize gas carrier (MGC) features a wider beam, allowing for greater cargo capacity, while its ammonia-powered engine enables zero-emission operations. The SWAN 3,500 TEU ammonia-fueled container ship includes advanced safety measures to handle ammonia’s toxic properties, ensuring reliability and safety. Additionally, the LNG dual-fueled SWAN 1,300 TEU container ship is designed for intra-European routes, featuring ice-class capabilities to operate in colder climates while aligning with decarbonization goals.
