EIB Marks 1,000 Days of War in Ukraine with €14.5 Million Support for Municipal Infrastructure in Dnipro and Mykolaiv

(IN BRIEF) In response to Ukraine’s ongoing recovery efforts, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has allocated €14.5 million in EU-backed funds to support the rehabilitation of municipal infrastructure in Dnipro and Mykolaiv. This funding will aid in the restoration of water supply and wastewater treatment systems in Mykolaiv and the upgrade of street lighting in Dnipro. The EIB’s continued support is part of its broader Ukraine Solidarity Urgent Response package, which has already provided over €2 billion to Ukraine since 2022.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 20-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — As the war in Ukraine reaches its 1,000th day, the European Investment Bank (EIB) continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction efforts. With an additional €14.5 million in EU-backed funds, the EIB is working to improve vital municipal infrastructure in Mykolaiv and Dnipro, focusing on essential areas such as water supply, wastewater treatment, and public lighting.

This new financial support is part of the broader Ukraine Solidarity Urgent Response package, through which the EIB has already provided more than €2 billion to aid Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in 2022. The funds allocated today will help rebuild and modernize critical infrastructure in these two cities, which have been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict.

In Mykolaiv, €7.8 million will go toward restoring and upgrading the city’s water supply and wastewater treatment systems, operated by the Municipal Enterprise Mykolaiv Vodokanal. This initiative is especially vital as the city grapples with water shortages caused by Russian shelling, which has severely damaged the existing infrastructure. The upgrades will not only improve resilience but also help Mykolaiv meet national and EU standards for wastewater discharge, ensuring long-term sustainability.

In Dnipro, €6.7 million will be used to modernize the city’s street lighting. The EIB’s funding will replace outdated sodium lamps with energy-efficient LED systems, reducing energy consumption and operational costs while increasing safety for both pedestrians and drivers. This initiative is part of the EIB’s Ukraine Municipal Infrastructure Programme (UMIP), which aims to enhance urban infrastructure across the country.

EIB Vice-President Teresa Czerwińska, who oversees the bank’s operations in Ukraine, highlighted the resilience of the Ukrainian people, stating:
“While the 1,000-day milestone is a reminder of the immense challenges Ukraine continues to face, it also demonstrates the unbreakable strength of the Ukrainian people. The EIB’s steadfast support is key to rebuilding vital infrastructure and fostering economic recovery. Together with our EU partners, we remain committed to Ukraine’s journey to rebuild and ultimately join the EU.”

European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis added:
“Russia’s illegal aggression has created dire conditions for the Ukrainian people, destroying infrastructure and causing severe shortages. Today’s EIB funding will provide critical support to Mykolaiv and Dnipro, helping to make these cities safer and more resilient. The EU continues to stand by Ukraine as it faces these unimaginable challenges.”

Local leaders expressed gratitude for the international support. Mykolaiv’s Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych emphasized the urgency of restoring water services:
“Mykolaiv is facing significant challenges in securing a reliable water supply. With the EIB’s support, we can accelerate the restoration of our water infrastructure and improve access for our residents, advancing the city’s recovery.”

Borys Filatov, Mayor of Dnipro, highlighted the importance of the street lighting project:
“Despite the ongoing shelling, our goal is to maintain normal life in Dnipro under these difficult conditions. With the EIB’s €6.7 million, we can upgrade our street lighting, ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens, even in the darkest times.”

The EIB’s support continues to play a critical role in Ukraine’s efforts to recover from the devastating effects of the war and rebuild its infrastructure, helping cities like Mykolaiv and Dnipro emerge stronger and more resilient.
