Norway’s MaksGrid Project Targets 25% Boost in Power Grid Utilization

Norway’s MaksGrid Project Targets 25% Boost in Power Grid Utilization

(IN BRIEF) The MaksGrid project, led by DNV and supported by the Pilot-E scheme, aims to increase Norway’s power grid utilization by 25% through innovative solutions like dynamic transmission limits and coordinated system control. The initiative, funded with NOK 26 million, seeks to address grid capacity challenges, support renewable energy growth, and reduce environmental impacts. With backing from industry leaders, the project will run from 2024 to 2027 and could set the stage for global commercialization of Norwegian technology.

(PRESS RELEASE) BÆRUM, 14-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The MaksGrid project, led by DNV under the Pilot-E scheme, is set to explore new solutions to increase the efficiency of Norway’s power grid by 25%. With support from key players in the energy sector, including Statnett, SINTEF Energy, and The Norwegian Smartgrid Centre, the project will develop and test measures like coordinated automatic system control and dynamic transmission limits to enhance grid capacity without waiting for costly and time-consuming new infrastructure.

Funded with NOK 26 million from Pilot-E, the initiative aims to address challenges posed by the growing demand for grid capacity, a critical barrier to Norway’s green transition. The project’s goal is to create a sustainable and efficient power grid system that will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the expansion of renewable energy sources.

Statnett, the project owner, views MaksGrid as a key initiative for increasing electrification while minimizing environmental impact, with planned investments of €1 billion over the coming years. The project is expected to serve as a model for international commercialization of innovative Norwegian technology, positioning the country as a leader in power grid solutions.

The project will run from 2024 to 2027, bringing together a consortium of industry leaders, grid companies, and technology providers to drive sustainable growth in Norway’s energy sector.
