Voith Launches Hydro Pocket Cloud Monitoring at Ohsawagawa Hydropower Station in Japan

(IN BRIEF) Voith, together with Fuji Electric, has deployed the first Hydro Pocket digital-monitoring system at Ohsawagawa hydropower station in Yamagata, Japan, replacing closed-circuit access with a cloud-based, Internet-accessible dashboard. Launched in March 2025, the localized Japanese interface provides real-time metrics on energy output, plant operations, and grid status, along with historical trends and automated reports. Early results show improved decision-making, performance gains, and proactive maintenance planning. Operators now plan to expand sensor coverage and data-storage duration, showcasing Voith’s leadership in digitizing hydropower assets.

(PRESS RELEASE) HEIDENHEIM, 1-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Voith has successfully commissioned its first Hydro Pocket solution in Japan at the Ohsawagawa hydropower station in Yamagata Prefecture in early March 2025. Previously accessible only via closed-circuit systems, plant data can now be viewed in real time on any Internet-enabled device—paving the way for further modernization despite the region’s challenging winter access.

Implemented in close collaboration with Fuji Electric as the local interface and technical partner, the cloud-based Hydro Pocket application delivers instant insights into energy production, operational status, and grid connection. Its Japanese-language dashboard also provides historical trend charts, automated reports, and integrated event logs, transforming raw data into actionable intelligence.

“Real-time data visibility has revolutionized our operations, enabling faster, data-driven decisions and driving efficiency improvements,” reports a representative of the Yamagata Prefecture local government. “Building on this success, we’re exploring additional sensor deployments and extended data retention to enhance predictive-analysis capabilities.”

Dirk Fuchs, Head of HyService Digital & Automation at Voith Hydro, notes the broader benefits: “Hydro Pocket accelerates decision-making, boosts performance, and supports proactive issue resolution—backed by Voith’s expert analysis services.”

Sunil Pandiri, Chief Service Officer at Voith Hydro, adds: “We’re proud to see Hydro Pocket enter the Japanese market. This first reference project strengthens our position as a trusted partner in hydropower digitalization and demonstrates the long-term value of data-driven services for critical infrastructure.”
