Voith introduces E-Pack DS with up to 40 MW power transmission to meet growing demand for space-saving electrification

(IN BRIEF) Voith and ELIN Motoren have introduced the E-Pack DS, a fully integrated electromechanical drive system that merges motor and gearbox into a single synchronized drivetrain. With a power transmission capacity of up to 40 MW, the E-Pack DS is designed for compressors, pumps, and generators in industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, and power generation. Compared with conventional setups, the system reduces footprint by up to 30 percent and weight by 10 percent, while offering 1 percent higher efficiency and typical ROI within two to three years. By eliminating sensitive bearings, pre-assembling all components, and ensuring rigorous testing, the solution enhances reliability, simplifies maintenance, and improves long-term performance. The E-Pack DS will make its public debut at the Turbomachinery & Pump Symposia in Houston in September 2025.

(PRESS RELEASE) HEIDENHEIM, 10-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Voith, together with ELIN Motoren, has launched the E-Pack DS, an innovative electromechanical drive solution created for industries where efficiency, durability, and compact design are critical. Unlike conventional systems, the E-Pack DS integrates the motor and gearbox into one synchronized drivetrain, capable of delivering power transmission of up to 40 MW. This all-in-one system is aimed at compressors, pumps, and generators used across energy, chemicals, petrochemicals, and oil and gas sectors.

One of the defining features of the E-Pack DS is its ability to overcome space and weight constraints. The fully integrated design is up to 30 percent smaller and around 10 percent lighter than traditional parallel shaft gear units. Its torsional and lateral optimization simplifies installation, cuts down infrastructure requirements, and makes it an attractive solution for offshore facilities, mobile systems, and other restricted environments.

The system is not only compact but also highly economical. Offering up to 1 percent greater efficiency compared to standard gear units, it reduces energy losses and lowers overall operating costs. Thanks to its streamlined engineering and reduced component count, customers typically achieve return on investment within two to three years, while enjoying sustained savings throughout its 20- to 30-year service life.

Reliability is at the core of the design. By eliminating sensitive bearings on both the high- and low-speed sides, the E-Pack DS reduces wear and increases durability. Each unit is pre-assembled and tested as a complete system, ensuring that performance remains consistent and integration is seamless. Extended maintenance intervals, reduced oil consumption, and improved thermal behavior all contribute to long-term operational stability.

Christian Honold, Senior Product Manager Turbo Gears & Diaphragm Couplings at Voith, commented: “The E-Pack DS is the result of combining Voith’s mechanical expertise with ELIN Motoren’s electrical know-how. Customers gain a harmonized, pre-tested drivetrain that simplifies project execution and raises efficiency across applications.”

Christian Fauland, Director Business Unit Power Plants at ELIN Motoren, added: “Our collaboration with Voith has resulted in a solution that removes complexity from drivetrain integration. The E-Pack DS gives customers confidence in both reliability and performance.”

Voith will officially present the E-Pack DS at the Turbomachinery & Pump Symposia in Houston, scheduled for September 16–18, 2025, at booth 2529.
