Voith and HADAG Celebrate Milestone in Hybrid Ferry Electrification

(IN BRIEF) Voith and HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst AG have commissioned the first of three type 2030 hybrid ferries for the Port of Hamburg. The ferry, featuring advanced electric Voith Schneider Propellers (eVSPs) and an optimized hull design, promises reduced emissions, improved maneuverability, and enhanced energy efficiency. The ferry will be showcased at the SMM industry event in Hamburg in September 2024.

(PRESS RELEASE) HEIDENHEIM, 7-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Voith has achieved a significant milestone in ship propulsion electrification in collaboration with HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst AG. In July 2024, the first of three new type 2030 hybrid ferries for the Port of Hamburg was commissioned, featuring two advanced electric Voith Schneider Propellers (eVSPs). These five-blade 9X5/100 eVSPs ensure low pollutant and noise emissions, while optimizing maneuverability and safety.

Voith’s role extended beyond providing propulsion technology to include the optimization of the ship’s hull. Using CFD simulations and automated optimization methods, Voith’s R&D team developed hundreds of hull design variants to meet stringent performance and efficiency requirements. Model tests confirmed the superior energy efficiency of the final design.

Oliver Lenz, Sales Application Manager Marine at Voith, highlighted the new ferry’s impressive features. The optimized hull design allows the ferry to be larger than its predecessors, measuring 33 meters in length and eight meters in width, accommodating up to 250 passengers with multifunctional spaces. The new eVSPs, equipped with integrated permanent magnet electric motors from ELIN Motoren, enable the ferry to achieve a maximum speed of 13 knots with reduced energy consumption.

In preparation for the ferry’s launch, Voith conducted training sessions for HADAG captains, familiarizing them with the new propulsion system’s benefits. The new ferry’s advantages will be showcased at the Voith booth during the SMM industry event in Hamburg from September 3-6, 2024.
