TotalEnergies Partners with Air Liquide to Advance Renewable Hydrogen Production in France

(IN BRIEF) TotalEnergies has partnered with Air Liquide to produce renewable hydrogen at the La Mède biorefinery in southeast France, aiming to reduce its CO2 emissions by 130,000 tons annually. The €150 million project will recycle byproducts to produce 25,000 tons of hydrogen annually, supporting the production of biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel. Set to begin operations in 2028, this initiative complements the Masshylia project with ENGIE, which targets 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2029. These efforts are part of TotalEnergies’ goal to decarbonize its European refineries, reducing emissions by three million tons annually by 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 25-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — As part of its commitment to decarbonize hydrogen use in its European refineries by 2030, TotalEnergies has announced a new partnership with Air Liquide to produce renewable hydrogen at the La Mède biorefinery in southeast France. This initiative, which complements the ongoing Masshylia green hydrogen project with ENGIE, is expected to cut annual CO2 emissions at La Mède by 130,000 tons, aligning with TotalEnergies’ broader sustainability goals.

Air Liquide will oversee the construction and operation of a renewable hydrogen production unit at the La Mède site. With an annual capacity of 25,000 tons, this facility will recycle byproducts from TotalEnergies’ biorefinery, converting them into hydrogen for the production of biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The joint investment for the project totals €150 million, with production scheduled to commence in 2028.

Vincent Stoquart, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, highlighted the significance of the collaboration:
“This renewable hydrogen project with Air Liquide accelerates the decarbonization of our La Mède platform. Nearly a decade after its transformation began, La Mède continues to evolve as a low-carbon hydrogen hub, contributing to the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region’s sustainability ambitions.”

Simultaneously, TotalEnergies and ENGIE are advancing the Masshylia project, which will use water electrolysis to produce 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. Designed to support decarbonization efforts at the biorefinery and within the Fos-Berre industrial-port zone, the project’s first 20 MW electrolyzer is expected to be operational by 2029, pending European and French subsidies and regulatory approvals.

TotalEnergies is committed to reducing CO2 emissions across its European refineries by adopting low-carbon hydrogen solutions, aiming to cut annual emissions by three million tons by 2030. This partnership with Air Liquide further solidifies its role in the transition to sustainable energy while driving regional and industry-wide decarbonization efforts.
