SUEZ Expands Environmental Initiatives in Morocco with New Agreements in Water and Waste Management

(IN BRIEF) SUEZ has solidified its commitment to Morocco’s environmental goals through four new agreements aimed at enhancing water and waste management infrastructure. These partnerships include two “green landfill” projects in Rabat and Kenitra, which will process waste for biogas and local energy, and collaborations with Safari Group and the MAScIR Foundation for digital water management and innovative waste research. This expansion reflects SUEZ’s dedication to sustainable development in Morocco amid rising population demands and climate challenges.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 30-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — As part of French President Emmanuel Macron‘s recent visit to Rabat, SUEZ, a global leader in water and waste management solutions, announced four significant agreements with Morocco, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability in the region. The agreements address Morocco’s growing need for optimized water resources and effective waste management, critical in the face of rapid population growth and climate challenges. Since establishing a presence in Morocco in the 1950s, SUEZ has remained a trusted partner, and these new collaborations underscore its dedication to Morocco’s environmental transition.

Two of these agreements focus on advancing sustainable waste management in Rabat and Kenitra. In collaboration with SOMAGEC and JET CONTRACTORS, SUEZ will oversee the construction and operation of the Oum Azza waste treatment and recovery center in Rabat, designed to process 850,000 tonnes of waste from the area annually. This facility will act as a “green landfill,” utilizing only 47% of waste for landfilling while repurposing the remainder for biogas production and other recovery methods, contributing to a circular economy.

SUEZ will also manage a new waste treatment center in Kenitra, benefiting nearly 500,000 residents with a similar “green landfill” model. This €120 million, 20-year project will turn waste into sustainable local energy, including infrastructure for biogas recovery. This marks SUEZ’s third “green landfill” project in Morocco, following the success of the Meknes center, which now generates enough energy to be self-sufficient.

In the realm of water management, SUEZ signed a memorandum of understanding with Safari Group to launch a joint venture providing digital solutions for water network management. Additionally, SUEZ has partnered with the MAScIR Foundation, under the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, to conduct research on innovative waste treatment and water management, including seawater desalination—a continuation of their earlier 2024 partnership.

Sabrina Soussan, Chairman and CEO of SUEZ, highlighted the company’s sustained investment in Morocco, emphasizing the organization’s intent to work closely with local authorities and companies to advance sustainable development goals in the Kingdom.
