Normandy’s BIOSYNERGY Plant Revolutionizes Waste-to-Energy with Sustainable Innovation

(IN BRIEF) The BIOSYNERGY plant, a cutting-edge facility for generating renewable energy from biomass and solid recovered fuel (SRF), has been inaugurated in the Le Havre region of Normandy, France. Spearheaded by SUEZ and Vauban Infrastructure Partners, alongside regional and environmental bodies, the €85 million project aims to process 90,000 tonnes of waste annually, producing 300,000 MWh of energy—enough to heat 24,000 homes while preventing 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. The plant, which embodies circular economy principles, leverages a local supply chain and aligns with France’s goals for reducing landfill use and increasing renewable energy. With significant environmental and economic benefits, including 45 new jobs, the BIOSYNERGY plant positions Normandy as a leader in sustainable energy and resource recovery.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 23-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — BIOSYNERGY plant, a state-of-the-art biomass and solid recovered fuel (SRF) energy recovery facility, has officially opened in the Le Havre Seine Métropole region of Normandy, France. Spearheaded by SUEZ, Vauban Infrastructure Partners (through the BTP Impact Local fund), the Normandy region, and ADEME, this €85 million initiative aims to advance the region’s energy transition and circular economy goals. By processing 90,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste, wood waste, and SRF annually, the plant will produce 300,000 MWh of renewable energy—enough to heat 24,000 homes and supply local industries—while preventing 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year compared to fossil fuel usage.

The BIOSYNERGY project aligns with France’s Energy Transition for Green Growth Act, focusing on reducing landfill dependency and increasing renewable energy production. Its operations rely on a local supply chain, with SRF sourced from SUEZ’s TriNergy facility in Rogerville, just a few kilometers away. The TriNergy site repurposes a former industrial area to process waste into high-quality SRF, exemplifying the integration of circular economy practices.

SUEZ CEO Sabrina Soussan highlighted the plant’s role in transforming waste into valuable resources for the community and industry, while Vauban Infrastructure Partners’ Mounir Corm emphasized the private sector’s essential role in achieving sustainability through collaborative partnerships. The facility has garnered support from ADEME, the Normandy region, and leading financial institutions.

Attended by regional leaders, including Normandy President Hervé Morin and Le Havre Mayor Edouard Philippe, the inauguration marks a significant milestone in regional environmental and economic efforts. The BIOSYNERGY plant underscores Normandy’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy sovereignty, and fostering sustainable growth, all while creating 45 new jobs.
