Stadler to Supply Battery-Powered Locomotives for RATP, Supporting Sustainable Maintenance of Paris Metro

(IN BRIEF) The Paris Metro operator, RATP, has commissioned Stadler to deliver twelve custom-made battery-powered locomotives for use in maintenance, service, and repair work across the metro’s 245-kilometer network. These locomotives, set to be introduced by 2027, will operate on all 14 metro lines, including both steel rail and rubber-tire systems. Their battery-electric drive allows them to run efficiently in tunnels and at construction sites where the conductor rail is inactive. This partnership marks Stadler’s first order from RATP and highlights the focus on sustainability and innovation in metro infrastructure maintenance.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUSSNANG, 21-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Régie autonome des transports Parisiens (RATP), the operator of the Paris Metro, has placed an order with Stadler for twelve battery-powered locomotives, marking the first collaboration between the two companies. These custom-built locomotives, designed to support service, maintenance, and repair work across the 245-kilometer Paris Metro network, are scheduled for introduction into service by 2027. The contract also includes an option for two additional locomotives.

The new locomotives will operate on all 14 metro lines, including both conventional steel rail and rubber-tire (Pneu-Metro) routes. Measuring 15 meters in length and equipped with fully automatic couplings, these four-axle locomotives are designed to handle the tight curves of the Paris Metro and pull up to 240 tonnes in double traction. Their battery-electric drive allows them to function efficiently both during normal operations and at construction sites where the conductor rail is switched off, making them versatile, environmentally friendly, and reliable.

These locomotives represent a significant step forward for RATP’s metro infrastructure maintenance, offering flexibility, low-maintenance, and a high degree of redundancy for safety and reliability, particularly in tunnels and at work sites. The vehicles will be powered by either the 750V conductor rail during standard operation or by onboard traction batteries at construction sites, where they can recharge via the conductor rail when it is active again.
