Stadler and GYSEV unveil final design for new intercity trains set to transform Hungarian rail travel

(IN BRIEF) Stadler and GYSEV have completed the design of 11 new FLIRT intercity trains, which will be produced in Szolnok and delivered starting in late 2027. This marks Hungary’s first intercity EMU procurement in 30 years. The trains, built for long-distance routes between Sopron, Szombathely, and Budapest, as well as for operation in Austria, will feature modern interiors, flexible seating, bicycle spaces, Wi-Fi, USB-C charging, and a bistro area. With this order, Hungary will soon have 200 Stadler-built trains in service, confirming Stadler’s pivotal role in the country’s railway transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) BUDAPEST, 22-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stadler, together with GYSEV Zrt., has completed the design phase for 11 new FLIRT intercity trains, setting the stage for production to begin this autumn at the company’s Szolnok plant in Hungary. This project is a milestone for the country’s railway system, as it marks the first acquisition of new intercity electric multiple units (EMUs) in 30 years. The first train will be introduced into passenger service in late 2027, with the full fleet expected to be operational by early 2028.

The new intercity trains were designed through close collaboration between Stadler, GYSEV, and the Innova Design Team. The exterior features a sleek silver body complemented by GYSEV’s traditional green and yellow accents, while the interior combines glass, grey metal, warm brown tones, and oak finishes, creating a modern yet welcoming travel environment.

Optimized for long-distance travel, the five-car, dual-voltage units will operate on the Sopron–Budapest and Szombathely–Budapest lines, with the added capability to run in Austria. They are designed to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h and will feature flexible layouts, including additional bicycle spaces in summer and more seats in winter.

Passengers will benefit from a wide range of modern amenities, including air-conditioned low-floor compartments, a bistro area with vending machines, extra luggage racks, and a state-of-the-art passenger information system. Each seat will be equipped with Wi-Fi, USB-C ports, standard charging sockets, and phone holders, ensuring convenience for both leisure and business travelers.

GYSEV CEO Szilárd Kövesdi emphasized that these trains will be notably different from the regional FLIRT units already in operation, saying they are specifically tailored for longer journeys and bring 21st-century standards to intercity rail. “Thanks to the work of our teams and Stadler’s expertise, passengers will soon enjoy an elegant and modern train design that meets the expectations of long-distance travelers,” Kövesdi noted.

Dr. Róbert Homolya, chairman of Stadler Trains Hungary, pointed out the significance of this order for the Szolnok factory. “It is a great moment for our plant to once again produce trains for the Hungarian market. With 55 FLIRT IC car bodies being manufactured in Szolnok under this project, Hungary will soon reach 200 Stadler-built vehicles in operation. Our rolling stock is already the backbone of the country’s railways, with every second passenger traveling on a Stadler train,” he said.

The FLIRT has been Stadler’s most successful product since its introduction in 2002, with more than 2,750 units sold across 21 countries. Hungary is a key market, with GYSEV already operating 20 FLIRTs and MÁV running 123. The Szolnok factory has contributed significantly to this success, having built parts for nearly 1,000 FLIRT trains totaling almost 3,900 carriages.
