SounDigital Integrates Infineon’s CoolGaN™ Technology to Boost Efficiency and Sound Quality in New 1500W Class D Amplifier

(IN BRIEF) SounDigital has incorporated Infineon’s CoolGaN™ transistors into its latest 1500 W Class D amplifier, enhancing both energy efficiency and sound quality. The integration of GaN technology results in a 60% reduction in energy loss, a 5% improvement in energy efficiency, and a more compact design. With a reduced heat sink size and better sound fidelity, this new amplifier represents a leap forward in audio product development.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 21-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — In response to the growing demands for compact, efficient, and high-performance audio equipment, SounDigital has integrated Infineon Technologies AG’s CoolGaN™ transistors into its new 1500 W Class D amplifier. This collaboration addresses the challenges manufacturers face in balancing sound quality, energy efficiency, and design innovation in the rapidly evolving audio sector.

The new amplifier, designed to operate at an 800 kHz switching frequency and deliver five channels, features Infineon’s advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, which has significantly improved the amplifier’s performance. By incorporating CoolGaN™ transistors, SounDigital has boosted the energy efficiency of the amplifier by 5%, while also reducing energy loss by a substantial 60%. This improvement translates into a more cost-effective, user-friendly, and reliable audio system.

Juliano Anflor, CEO of SounDigital, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration: “By incorporating Infineon’s GaN power semiconductors, we are able to enhance the performance of our amplifiers, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in audio technology. This innovation allows us to create more efficient systems that deliver better sound, all while reducing costs and simplifying the user experience.”

Infineon’s GaN solutions are proving to be a game-changer for the audio amplifier industry, offering unmatched efficiency, performance, and sound quality. Johannes Schoiswohl, Head of the GaN Business Line at Infineon, shared his thoughts on the impact of GaN technology: “Our GaN solutions are setting new standards in the industry, offering higher power density and drastically reduced energy consumption. SounDigital’s latest amplifier is a prime example of how GaN technology can elevate both the sound experience and the overall performance of audio systems.”

For the 1500 W Class D amplifier, SounDigital chose Infineon’s 100 V normally-off E-mode GaN transistors: the IGC033S101 in a PQFN-3×5 package and the IGB110S101 in a PQFN-3×3 package. These transistors, with their low on-resistance, are ideal for high-current applications and contribute to the amplifier’s significant gains in both sound quality and efficiency. The use of GaN technology has not only reduced power dissipation by 75 W but also enabled a 50% smaller heat sink, making the overall system 40% smaller without sacrificing performance.

Further enhancing the sound quality, the CoolGaN™ transistors have reduced total harmonic distortion (THD) by 70%, resulting in clearer, more precise audio output. Additionally, by cutting idle current by 40%, the new design significantly improves energy efficiency, making the amplifier both environmentally and economically more viable.
