Skanska and Svenska kraftnät Advance Stockholm Grid Capacity with New 400 kV Connection

(IN BRIEF) Skanska has signed a SEK 500 million contract with Svenska kraftnät to expand the electricity grid in western Stockholm through the installation of a new 10-kilometer-long 400 kV cable connection between Kronåsen and Råcksta. The project is part of a wider grid modernization effort to replace existing 220 kV lines, improve capacity, and secure long-term electricity supply for the region. Certified under BREEAM Infrastructure, the project emphasizes sustainability, with construction starting after summer 2026 and completion expected in autumn 2030.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 20-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Skanska has entered into an agreement with Svenska kraftnät to carry out a major expansion of the electricity grid in western Stockholm, reinforcing capacity and long-term reliability in the region’s power supply. The contract is valued at approximately SEK 500 million and will be recorded in Skanska Sweden’s order bookings for the first quarter of 2026.

The assignment primarily covers extensive groundwork and cable installation for a new high-voltage 400 kilovolt electricity connection stretching around 10 kilometers between Kronåsen and Råcksta. The project forms part of a broader modernization program led by Svenska kraftnät to upgrade the electricity infrastructure in western Stockholm, where existing 220 kV lines are being replaced with higher-capacity 400 kV connections.

By increasing transmission capacity, the grid expansion aims to safeguard operational reliability and ensure a stable electricity supply to meet the future needs of the Stockholm region. The upgrade is a critical component in supporting urban growth, electrification, and the rising demand for secure and resilient energy infrastructure.

Sustainability is a central focus of the project, which will be certified under the BREEAM Infrastructure standard. Environmental performance, responsible resource use, and long-term resilience are integral to the project’s design and execution.

Preparatory work will commence immediately, with full-scale construction scheduled to begin after the summer of 2026. Completion of the project is planned for the autumn of 2030, marking a significant milestone in strengthening Stockholm’s high-voltage electricity network.
