Siemens Launches Advanced Eco-Friendly e-Starter with Ultra-Fast Short-Circuit Protection and Seamless Automation Integration

(IN BRIEF) Siemens Smart Infrastructure has unveiled its fully electronic SIMATIC ET 200SP e-Starter, offering advanced, ultra-fast short-circuit protection that outpaces traditional technology by 1,000 times. Designed for high-efficiency motors in sectors like food and beverage and manufacturing, the e-Starter’s Smart Start feature reduces inrush currents, minimizing mechanical wear and enabling more reliable, energy-efficient operation. Integrated with the TIA Portal for seamless automation, the e-Starter is also environmentally sustainable, earning Siemens’ EcoTech label. It will debut at the SPS trade fair in Nuremberg.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZUG, 9-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens Smart Infrastructure has introduced its first fully electronic starter, the SIMATIC ET 200SP e-Starter, designed with advanced semiconductor technology. This innovative device provides unprecedented short-circuit protection, up to 1,000 times faster than traditional methods, significantly reducing downtime and maintenance. This technology minimizes wear and tear on motors and other equipment by quickly detecting and disconnecting short circuits, ensuring immediate readiness for operation post-clearance.

The ET 200SP e-Starter is optimized for applications in sectors like food and beverage, intralogistics, and mechanical engineering, where frequent cleaning or harsh conditions can lead to short-circuits. Traditional motor starters, which are often prone to damage in such cases, are effectively replaced by the e-Starter’s ultra-fast, wear-free switching facilitated by silicon carbide MOSFETs, capable of shutting down in under 4 µs. This feature enhances system availability, reduces the need for replacement parts, and saves on storage costs.

Moreover, the e-Starter’s Smart Start feature counters the high inrush currents typical of IE3 and IE4 high-efficiency motors, thereby lowering electrical load and mitigating mechanical wear during motor start-ups. These capabilities, coupled with seamless integration into Siemens’ Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal, provide robust diagnostics and simplified commissioning, making it a valuable tool for system integrators and plant manufacturers.

In line with Siemens’ commitment to sustainability, the ET 200SP e-Starter carries the Siemens EcoTech label, recognizing its minimal material usage, energy-efficient operation, and reduced maintenance needs. This new starter will be showcased at the Smart Production Solutions (SPS) trade fair in Nuremberg from November 12-14, 2024, at the Siemens booth in Hall 11.
