Sener to Deliver Detailed Design for 7.8 km Extension of Toronto’s Line 2 into Scarborough

(IN BRIEF) Sener has been selected to develop the detailed design for the 7.8 km, fully underground extension of Toronto’s Line 2 into Scarborough, working alongside the Aecon–FCC Canada Limited consortium. The project includes three new stations with integrated bus terminals, upgrades to an existing station, eight emergency exits, and four substations. Responsibilities span architecture, structures, electromechanical systems, geotechnics, ventilation, electrification, signalling, communications, trackwork, landscaping, utilities, integration, and safety certification. Expected to serve 105,000 passengers per day—52,000 of them new users—the extension will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 10,000 tonnes. Executed under a Progressive Design and Build model, Sener’s role began during consortium formation and preliminary design. This milestone further solidifies Sener’s long-standing presence in Canada’s rail infrastructure market.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 12-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Sener, the international engineering and technology group, has been appointed to deliver the detailed design for the extension of Toronto’s Line 2 subway into Scarborough. The contract was awarded to the Aecon–FCC Canada Limited joint venture by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario, covering the construction of stations, trackwork, and systems.

Spanning 7.8 km entirely below ground, the extension will introduce three brand-new underground stations, each equipped with surface-level bus terminals for seamless modal transfers. The scope also includes the refurbishment of an existing station, the addition of eight emergency egress points, and the installation of four electrical substations.

As lead engineering consultant during delivery, Sener will produce comprehensive designs for architectural elements, structural works, and electromechanical systems. This encompasses geotechnical assessments and cavern layouts, ventilation networks, power supply, signalling and train control, communications infrastructure, track alignment, site landscaping, and utility diversions. Sener will further oversee system integration and secure all necessary safety certifications.

This expansion pushes Line 2 deeper into Scarborough—Toronto’s eastern borough—offering 105,000 daily riders an efficient route to the city core. Of those, an estimated 52,000 will be new subway users, cutting CO₂ emissions by up to 10,000 tonnes each year.

Delivered under a Progressive Design and Build framework, the project fosters tight collaboration among owners, contractors, communities, and stakeholders to mitigate risks. Sener’s involvement began in early consortium formation and preliminary design stages, helping Aecon and FCC Canada Limited win the contract.
