RWE Signs Five-Year Renewable Power Agreement to Supply Over 15 Percent of Lidl GB’s Electricity Demand

RWE Signs Five-Year Renewable Power Agreement to Supply Over 15 Percent of Lidl GB’s Electricity Demand

(IN BRIEF) RWE has signed a five-year Power Purchase Agreement with Lidl GB to supply 100 gigawatt hours of renewable electricity annually, covering just over 15 percent of the retailer’s national power demand in the United Kingdom, with the energy sourced from RWE’s Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea. The agreement follows earlier cooperation between RWE and Lidl’s German operations, where a separate long-term PPA will see around 250 GWh of green electricity delivered each year from the Kaskasi offshore wind farm from 2028 to 2038. The partnership highlights Lidl GB’s ongoing efforts to integrate more renewable energy into its operations as it continues to expand across Britain with more than 1,000 stores and 13 distribution centers, while also reflecting RWE’s growing role as a key supplier of offshore wind power to major corporate customers.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 5-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has entered into a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Lidl GB, marking a further step in the retailer’s transition toward renewable energy in the United Kingdom. The five-year contract, which is already in effect, secures an annual supply of 100 gigawatt hours of electricity, representing just over 15 percent of Lidl GB’s total electricity consumption across its national operations. The renewable power will be sourced from RWE’s Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea, a major facility that has been operational since 2015. The wind farm comprises 160 turbines with a combined installed capacity of 576 megawatts, making it one of the larger offshore installations in British waters.

This latest agreement builds on an existing partnership between RWE and Lidl in Germany, where the companies have already collaborated on long-term renewable energy supply arrangements. In spring 2023, the German retail businesses of Schwarz Group, including Lidl and Kaufland, concluded a separate PPA with RWE. Under that deal, which will run from 2028 to 2038, RWE is set to deliver approximately 250 gigawatt hours of green electricity annually from its Kaskasi offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

Lidl GB has expanded steadily since its entry into the British market in 1994 and now employs more than 35,000 people across its operations. The company currently operates over 1,000 stores and 13 distribution centers throughout England, Scotland, and Wales, making it a significant player in the UK grocery sector. As part of the wider Schwarz Group, Lidl ranks among Europe’s leading food retailers, with around 12,600 stores and more than 230 logistics centers and warehouses across 31 countries, supported by a global workforce exceeding 382,400 employees.
