Ten Years of Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm Delivering 576 MW, 100 Local Jobs, and £8.5 Million for North Wales Communities

(IN BRIEF) Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm, owned by RWE with partners Stadtwerke München and Macquarie GIG, has marked ten years of operation off North Wales, delivering 576 MW of renewable capacity. Since June 2015, it has generated around 18,000 GWh of clean electricity—enough to power 5.5 million homes, enable 257 million 400 km EV journeys, and light 205 million bulbs continuously for a year. The project has contributed over £8.5 million to the Community Benefit Fund, supported the creation of the Green Links Cycle Trail, and added 100 permanent jobs at the Port of Mostyn. An award-winning wind turbine technician apprenticeship at Coleg Llandrillo now serves as RWE’s national hub. With consent granted for the Awel y Môr extension’s 50 turbines, Gwynt y Môr continues to drive economic and skills development in North Wales.

(PRESS RELEASE) MOSLYN, 7-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE is celebrating a decade of clean energy production at the Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm, situated off the coast of North Wales. With an installed capacity of 576 MW, it remains Wales’s largest renewable energy installation and, upon its June 2015 launch, ranked as the world’s second largest offshore wind farm. Over the past ten years, Gwynt y Môr has powered approximately 5.5 million homes, fueled some 257 million 400 km electric vehicle journeys, and kept 205 million LED bulbs lit around the clock.

Beyond its electricity output, the project has injected more than £8.5 million into the Gwynt y Môr Community Benefit Fund, underwriting hundreds of social initiatives—from sports-club upgrades to support for vulnerable groups via Abergele Actions and Building Brighter Futures in Rhyl. During construction, a £690,000 Tourism Fund forged the Green Links Cycle Trail, linking Prestatyn to Rhos-on-Sea and boosting local tourism.

At the Port of Mostyn, RWE’s bespoke Operations and Maintenance base has secured around 100 long-term jobs and introduced a new pontoon landing stage for Crew Transfer Vessels—enhancements that have strengthened the port’s competitive edge. In partnership with Coleg Llandrillo, RWE also launched an award-winning wind turbine technician apprenticeship scheme, now its national training hub, fueling skills growth across the region.

Gwynt y Môr is jointly owned by RWE (50%), Stadtwerke München (30%), and Macquarie GIG (20%), with RWE retaining operational responsibility for the 160-turbine array. Looking ahead, RWE and partners have secured consent for the neighboring Awel y Môr extension—Wales’s largest approved renewables project—adding 50 turbines to the region’s offshore energy portfolio.

Staff, former employees, and local officials—including MPs Dame Nia Griffith and Becky Gittins—gathered to mark the wind farm’s tenth anniversary, underscoring its role as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainability in North Wales. Sven Utermöhlen, RWE CEO Offshore Wind, remarked, “Gwynt y Môr has transformed North Wales into a centre of offshore wind expertise and laid the groundwork for future projects across the UK.”

Notes to editors
1 – Generation – During June 2015-June 2025 Gwynt y Mor generated around 18,000 GWh of electricity.
2 – Powering Homes – Equivalent to supplying electricity to ~5.6 million UK homes for an entire year. (Based on average household consumption of 3,239 kWh/year)
3 – Charging Electric Vehicles – Enough to power ~257 million EV journeys of 400 km each — roughly one charge per car. (Assuming 17.5 kWh per 100 km for a typical EV)
4 – Everyday –  Enough to power 205 million LED lightbulbs continuously for a year (based on typical LED ligjhtbulb running  24/7 per yr = ~87.6 kWh )
5 – Awel y Môr – RWE Renewables owns a 60% stake in Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm, which is it developing with partners Stadtwerke München (30%) and Siemens Financial Services (10%.)
