Nokia Selected by Telefónica España as Exclusive Networking Partner for Nationwide Edge Data Center Deployment

Nokia 7750 Service Router FP5

(IN BRIEF) Nokia has been selected by Telefónica España as the exclusive provider of networking solutions for a nationwide rollout of 17 Edge data center networks designed to support AI-driven services and distributed cloud infrastructure across Spain. The multi-year agreement includes connectivity solutions for computing and storage systems within the Edge nodes as well as external network connections, with 12 sites already deployed including the Tecno-Alcalá data center. The project supports Telefónica’s strategy to build a distributed Edge architecture capable of delivering ultra-low latency services for residential, enterprise and public-sector users. Using Nokia’s 7220 IXR and 7750 Service Router platforms, the new infrastructure will support AI workloads, Telco Cloud services and digital applications across sectors such as healthcare, education and industry while strengthening Spain’s position as a leader in sovereign digital infrastructure.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 26-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia has secured an exclusive agreement with Telefónica España to deliver networking infrastructure for a new generation of Edge data centers across Spain, supporting the operator’s nationwide rollout of AI-ready digital services. The collaboration strengthens Telefónica’s strategy to build a distributed Edge architecture that places computing power and storage closer to end users while enhancing performance, reliability and data sovereignty.

Under the multi-year partnership, Nokia will provide the networking connectivity for 17 Edge data center networks, with 12 sites already completed, including deployment at Telefónica’s flagship Tecno-Alcalá facility, one of the world’s largest data center locations. The agreement establishes Nokia as Telefónica’s exclusive networking technology provider for the Edge node program, ensuring a unified architecture and simplified network operations.

The new Edge infrastructure is designed to deliver high-speed connectivity with ultra-low latency and strong reliability, supporting a wide range of digital services. The Edge nodes will enable Artificial Intelligence workloads such as training and inference while supporting business and telecommunications cloud services for residential customers, enterprises and public-sector organizations. The project is expected to strengthen Spain’s role as a leading hub for advanced digital infrastructure in Europe.

Telefónica’s Edge architecture is intended to support essential digital services across sectors including healthcare, education, industrial applications and government operations. By bringing computing resources closer to users, the network will improve service responsiveness while supporting national objectives related to technological independence and secure data handling.

Nokia will deliver the internal data center networking infrastructure as well as connectivity between Edge sites and external networks. The solution will rely on Nokia 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR) data center switches and Nokia 7750 Service Router (SR) platforms, providing scalable connectivity and automation capabilities that support multi-cloud environments and evolving digital workloads.

The agreement builds on a successful initial phase in which Nokia deployed networking solutions for three pilot Edge data centers in 2024. The positive results from the pilot deployments led to Nokia’s selection as the sole networking partner for Telefónica’s broader Edge rollout.

Sergio Sánchez, CTIO at Telefónica España, stated that the project supports Telefónica’s strategy to position Edge Cloud and Artificial Intelligence as key drivers of future growth. He highlighted Nokia’s role in delivering secure and reliable connectivity for the company’s expanding Edge infrastructure and noted that the initiative will strengthen Spain’s digital ecosystem while supporting technological sovereignty.

David Heard, President of Network Infrastructure at Nokia, said the collaboration represents an important milestone in Telefónica’s transition to a nationwide distributed Edge architecture. He emphasized Nokia’s role in delivering high-performance networking solutions capable of supporting AI-driven workloads and advanced digital services across Spain.

Nokia continues to support telecommunications operators, cloud providers and mission-critical enterprises worldwide in developing secure and scalable data center networks capable of meeting the increasing performance demands associated with artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
