Nokia Advances AI Infrastructure Readiness With Breakthrough Switch Speeds and Automated Operations Enhancements

(IN BRIEF) Nokia has unveiled a major refresh of its data center networking portfolio, introducing the 7220 IXR-H6 switch family and expanded AI-driven operational tools to support rapidly growing AI workloads. The new switches deliver up to 102.4 Tb/s capacity and 1.6 Terabit Ethernet interfaces, offering double the performance of previous hardware while adhering to Ultra Ethernet Consortium specifications for large-scale AI infrastructures. With flexible cooling options, compatibility with both SR Linux and SONiC, and industry-leading performance, the switches are designed for use in increasingly demanding AI environments. Nokia also upgraded its Event-Driven Automation platform, adding agentic AI capabilities that streamline fault detection, analysis, and remediation, contributing to a reported 96% reduction in downtime. Supported by industry partners and analysts, the updates reinforce Nokia’s commitment to next-generation data center innovation ahead of commercial availability in 2025 and 2026.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 13-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia is expanding its data center networking capabilities with a new generation of high-performance switches and AI-enabled operational tools designed to keep pace with the explosive growth of AI workloads. The company announced significant updates to its data center portfolio, including the launch of the 7220 Interconnect Router (IXR) H6 family and major enhancements to its Event-Driven Automation (EDA) platform, which now incorporates advanced agentic AI capabilities.

With AI reshaping data center architecture and placing unprecedented demands on connectivity, Nokia’s latest innovations aim to deliver both breakthrough performance and greater operational resilience. The 7220 IXR-H6 switches support interface speeds of up to 1.6 Terabit Ethernet and achieve an overall throughput of 102.4 Tb/s—doubling both metrics compared to the previous generation. The switches are also aligned with specifications from the Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC), enabling advanced congestion control and traffic optimization in large-scale AI environments.

Nokia’s new switch family offers deployment flexibility with both air-cooled and liquid-cooled models, allowing integration into a wide variety of rack arrangements. Customers can choose between Nokia’s SR Linux network operating system or open-source Community SONiC, making Nokia the only vendor to provide hardware supporting both embedded NOS and SONiC with enterprise-grade development and support.

Parallel to its hardware expansion, Nokia is advancing operational intelligence through enhancements to the EDA platform. The updated system incorporates agentic AI to assist with natural-language troubleshooting, rapid diagnostics, and automated remediation. Combined with real-time telemetry, digital twins, dry-run testing, and near-instant rollback, these capabilities offer dramatic improvements in reliability—reducing network downtime by as much as 96%, according to a Bell Labs Consulting and Futurum study.

Industry partners highlighted the significance of these developments. Nscale’s Chief Revenue Officer, Tom Burke, emphasized the value Nokia’s technology brings as AI workloads accelerate, while analyst Alan Weckel of the 650 Group noted that 1.6 TE interfaces arrive at a crucial moment as agentic AI transforms networking demands and solidifies Ethernet’s position in AI data centers.

Vach Kompella, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Nokia’s IP Networks business, underscored the strategic importance of these launches, noting that the curve of AI adoption requires continuous advancement in both hardware and operational tools. The first units of the Nokia 7220 IXR-H6 are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2026, with EDA’s new AIOps features rolling out by year-end 2025.
