Netherlands’ Major Operators Lead European Effort in API Standardization and Online Fraud Prevention

(IN BRIEF) KPN, Odido, and Vodafone have launched CAMARA-based API security services in collaboration with the COIN association and GSMA Open Gateway, setting a new national standard for digital security in the Netherlands. These solutions — Number Verification and KYC Match — enable banks and digital providers to authenticate users securely and combat online fraud more effectively. The initiative responds to alarming fraud statistics, with one in seven Dutch citizens victimized last year. Supported by the GSMA and the Linux Foundation, CAMARA provides a global, open-source framework for standardized telecom APIs, now backed by over 80 operator groups covering 80% of global mobile connections. The move underscores the Dutch telecom industry’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and a safer digital landscape.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 31-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The Netherlands’ major telecom operators — KPN, Odido, and Vodafone — have joined forces to enhance digital security and fight online fraud through the introduction of innovative CAMARA-based API security services, developed in collaboration with the COIN association and the GSMA Open Gateway initiative. This landmark partnership sets a new benchmark for telecom-led digital protection in the country, fostering a safer and more trusted digital ecosystem for businesses and consumers alike.

As online threats continue to grow in sophistication, the need for stronger security infrastructure has never been more urgent. According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, one in seven Dutch citizens fell victim to online fraud last year, with total financial losses exceeding €1.75 billion. In response, this initiative represents a united front by the Dutch telecom sector to mitigate fraud and restore consumer trust in digital transactions.

The newly launched services — Number Verification and KYC Match — enable secure, fast, and reliable identity authentication for users logging in or conducting transactions on mobile devices. These capabilities empower banks, e-commerce platforms, and digital service providers to better detect and prevent fraud, ensuring smoother and safer user experiences. Delivered through a growing ecosystem of integration partners, the APIs also provide CPaaS developers with flexible and scalable tools for seamless implementation.

Henry Calvert, Head of Networks at the GSMA, praised the initiative, stating: “Digital scams and fraudulent attacks are a growing problem that can undermine user confidence in digital commerce. This collaboration among Dutch telecoms, financial institutions, and online retailers demonstrates how mobile network intelligence can play a key role in combating cybercrime.”

The CAMARA project, powered by the Linux Foundation and the GSMA, standardizes telecom network APIs globally, ensuring interoperability and scalability across markets. Through the GSMA Open Gateway, developers and communication platforms can adopt a unified approach to API security and functionality across borders. Today, the initiative connects over 80 mobile operator groups, representing 292 networks and more than 80% of global mobile connections, advancing a secure and interconnected digital future.
