Mercedes-Benz Enhances Safety in Econic Vehicles with Pedestrian Detection and Collision Prevention Systems

(IN BRIEF) Mercedes-Benz has introduced advanced safety features in its Econic waste collection vehicles, including the fourth-generation Active Brake Assist system, which detects pedestrians and automatically initiates partial braking to avoid collisions. Additionally, Sideguard Assist helps drivers navigate urban environments by warning them of nearby cyclists or pedestrians during turns. These innovations are designed to enhance safety in busy city streets, surpassing upcoming EU safety standards.

(PRESS RELEASE) STUTTGART/ WÖRTH, 22-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Mercedes-Benz has introduced advanced safety features in its Econic waste collection vehicles, prioritizing the safety of vulnerable road users in busy urban environments. The fourth-generation Active Brake Assist system, now available for the Econic, is designed to detect pedestrians and automatically trigger partial braking to help drivers avoid collisions. This advanced system can warn drivers of potential collisions, allowing them to take evasive actions such as full braking or steering away, while also providing an audible warning to pedestrians.

Active Brake Assist 4 is tailored to handle complex urban traffic scenarios, including detecting pedestrians entering the truck’s path, emerging from behind obstacles, or walking along the lane. This new feature surpasses EU safety requirements set to take effect in November 2018 and reflects Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to leading safety innovation in the commercial vehicle industry.

Another essential safety feature is Sideguard Assist, which helps drivers navigate the challenges of urban driving, particularly when turning in crowded city streets. This system monitors the vehicle’s right side and alerts the driver to the presence of cyclists or pedestrians. A visible LED warning appears in the A-pillar and, if a collision risk increases, additional visual and audible warnings are triggered to prevent accidents.

These safety systems aim to enhance both active and passive protection, ensuring that the Mercedes-Benz Econic can navigate urban environments more safely, where unpredictable pedestrian and cyclist movement is common.
