Lithuania expands air-defence capabilities with additional Saab MSHORAD system for 2026–2030 delivery

(IN BRIEF) Saab has received a new SEK 1.4 billion order from the Lithuanian Defence Materiel Agency for a third MSHORAD system battery, with deliveries scheduled from 2026 to 2030. The equipment will be installed on Oshkosh JLTV 4×4 vehicles, expanding Lithuania’s mobile air-defence capability. MSHORAD combines RBS 70 NG missiles, the Giraffe 1X radar, and a command-and-control architecture with datalink connectivity to detect, identify and neutralise airborne threats rapidly. Saab states that the system is built to withstand advanced countermeasures and support operational readiness under both expected and unforeseen conditions.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 1-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Saab has secured a third contract from the Lithuanian Defence Materiel Agency for its Mobile Short Range Air Defence (MSHORAD) system, marking another step forward in strengthening Lithuania’s ground-based air protection capabilities. The agreement, valued at approximately SEK 1.4 billion, covers delivery of the system between 2026 and 2030 and will provide the Lithuanian Armed Forces with an additional operational battery of the vehicle-integrated defence platform.

Under the terms of the order, Saab will integrate the system onto Oshkosh-built JLTV 4×4 vehicles, expanding Lithuania’s fleet of mobile air-defence assets designed for rapid manoeuvrability and on-the-move protection. Saab emphasises that the solution is engineered to withstand modern countermeasures and deliver reliable performance in complex and evolving threat environments.

MSHORAD functions as an agile protective layer for moving military units, bringing together a suite of integrated technologies for detection, tracking and engagement. The system is built around the RBS 70 NG short-range air-defence missile and the Giraffe 1X radar, linked through Saab’s command-and-control solution (GBAD C2) and supported by secure datalink communications between units. Its configuration enables fast response, high-mobility deployment, and effective interception capability across a variety of airborne threats.

Görgen Johansson, Head of Saab’s business area Dynamics, stated that the company is proud to continue supporting Lithuania’s national defence and highlighted the system’s resilience in the face of advanced countermeasures. He noted that MSHORAD gives operators the flexibility to prepare for foreseeable challenges while remaining equipped to counter unexpected aerial threats.
